Political Wire: CNN Poll Shows Perry Way Ahead of Republican Field
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 02:03 PM by flpoljunkie

Perry Way Ahead of Republican Field

A new CNN/Opinion Research survey of Republicans nationwide shows Rick Perry leading the primary field (with Giuliani and Palin out of the mix) as their choice for president with 32%, followed by Mitt Romney at 18%, Michele Bachmann at 12%, Newt Gingrich at 7%, Ron Paul at 6% and everyone else in the low single digits.

Notes pollster Keating Holland: "Perry's biggest support comes from Republicans who say they are supporters of the tea party movement - he wins 37 percent of their vote -- but he also edges Romney by a couple of points among Republicans who don't call themselves tea party supporters."

four or eight years ago guys like Huntsman or Romney would be considered the top rethugs for the nomination but not now. After they lose in 2012 they got to do some serious rebuilding that party if it can be rebuilt the problem right now is these tea fucks are being supported buy people like the Koch brothers who is supporting Perry

3. I disagree with a few things you said.
I think Perry is the prototypical republican candidate. He's the only real southern candidate with a chance to win, and Romney is flawed in many ways for the republican party. Perry's lead was predictable. He's a better fit for what they like. He's also a scary reminder of Bush.

12. Yep ...
I called this months ago - he is a SPOT on, like glove fit for the whole party, not just the teaheadists.

The party as a whole has lurched hard right, and also is flat out mean and completely dismissive of reality.

That is Perry.

2. Does that mean that Perry will not win?
The early front runner usually loses and this is too early for Perry. Though the republicans are a little more top-down.

4. Unless Perry implodes, he'll likely win the nomination. He's the anti-Obama for the Republican base.
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 02:15 PM by flpoljunkie
It will be very interesting to see how he performs in his first debate on September 7th, sponsored by NBC and Politico and held at the Reagan Presidential Library.

13. No, he isn't ...
He is a governor, they love them some governors for "executive experience."
He served in the military.
He wears his religion around his neck.
He is mean.
He flat out and with great enthusiasm dismisses reality, science and reason.
He is above average in height.

Sorry, he has the basics they love - governor, military, good physicals stature. He plays to religion. And, he GENUINELY and unabashedly propagates their nonsense.

He is the very embodiment of the republican party of 2011-12.

15. I disagree with your assessment
It is very early in the campaign season and it is the time for media to build them up so that they can later tear them down all along keeping the "news" of the campaign coverage plastered wall to wall 24/7 on whatever station you choose. He is part of the noise machine to lay the ground work (and attacks on Democrats) as they search for a message that sticks. If they find one it will be Jeb Bush, if not it will be Mitt Romney.

19. It is out of the media's hands ...
Honestly, I see the beltway trying to tear him down. They don't want him, IMO.

The media pimped John Huntsman. They STILL try to push him.

They have a different tone with Perry, not as positive.

BUT, he is such a spot on fit for the republican party right now that the media really does not have much say in it.

I don't think some people here are getting it.

Republicans did not like Romney. He was IN THEORY what they would like, a governor, good in stature, a reputation as being good with the economy. But, they just did not like him, he is geeky (like an Al Gore in some ways) and EVERYONE knows he is just saying what he needs to say to be a viable republican candidate in terms of their nonsense.

Bachman was always a placeholder for the tea party until a more viable candidate came along.

He sucked the life out of Bachman in a week, and took the people who have been holding their noses with Romney in two weeks.

Whether the establishment, general media or even the party itself likes it or not, what they have created over the last 20 years - a complete intellectual dishonestly, a brazen disregard for reason and truth, Perry embodies it with all of the extras they like in a candidate.

There is no other candidate who is going to be what he is - an alpha male, tea partier on steroids, who has the faux legitimacy on religion they love and the gravitas of being a governor.

there's even more red meat.

-Handsome
-Good hair
-Charismatic
-Believable
-Southern Drawl
-About as far away from a DC insider as you can get. Even Bush was an Ivy Leaguer and attended an Eastern Prep school. Perry went to Texas A&M!

8. Good
because I doubt he will be able to beat President Obama. Most average voters are going to be reminded too much of Dubyah by him. I think once most closely examine his background they will be turned off by him too. Homie should be a poster boy for cronyism.

16. Absolutely right. The great H.L. Mencken once said:
"As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” - H.L. Mencken. Voters of America - meet Rick Perry.

18. Well, when you scrape the bottom of the barrel for most of your candidates,
the one who appears slightly sane is bound to get the attention.
