Restrictions Could Keep Five Million Traditionally Democratic Voters From The Polls In 2012

Ryan J. Reilly

Restrictive voting laws in states across the country could affect up to five million voters from traditionally Democratic demographics in 2012, according to a new report by the Brennan Center. That's a number larger than the margin of victory in two of the last three presidential elections.

The new restrictions, the study found, "fall most heavily on young, minority, and low-income voters, as well as on voters with disabilities. This wave of changes may sharply tilt the political terrain for the 2012 election."

The study found that:

  • These new laws could make it significantly harder for more than five million eligible voters to cast ballots in 2012.

  • The states that have already cut back on voting rights will provide 171 electoral votes in 2012 - 63 percent of the 270 needed to win the presidency.

  • Of the 12 likely battleground states, as assessed by an August Los Angeles Times analysis of Gallup polling, five have already cut back on voting rights (and may pass additional restrictive legislation), and two more are currently considering new restrictions.

5. While I do not al like or approve of GOP Tactics, there is something
to be said about the Democratic Party. It is too
bad we are not organzized as a party so that all
these people would be out there getting themselves
registered.

Whan a party waits until 3 months before elections
then rushes around trying to get people interested
and out to the polls, they put themselves in a lose
situation.

Times have changed and the Party has not changed. Ignore
the voters until it is time to vote then make a furious
effort to move them. Of oourse running the part like
a Moderate Republican Party then go out and ask Democrats
to come out to vote may no longer work. Too bad we have
all this new technology,

One only needs to put the mouse on their state to see what laws have passed,
and which are still pending.....

It's a tool we need to use and then to take action!

11. There are several tactics that need to be employed.
Keep this news in the public of what Republicans are doing at the local level and keep pressure on Republicans. If there is enough pressure it may make it more difficult to pass anti-voter legislation.

Be prepared to use alternative methods of voting where possible that allows everyone to vote.

Educate the voters of what is needed to vote and strongly encourage them to vote because others are trying to prevent their vote.

...needs to get a grip.

They're trying to protect their monied interests and will pull out all stops to steal this election from us if we let them.

13. 5 million, along with the disaffected Democratic voters who have already said
that they aren't voting, will be enough for the Rethugs to steal it.

We had better get our shit together as Democrats RIGHT NOW!

The only good news for us is that the Republicans are imploding, too, not to mention their numbers are worse than the president, no matter what the Corporate Media is saying.

Eventually, they'll fall in line and support one of these Republican Losers. If we do not unite we are doomed!
