House votes to restrict healthcare law, with White House support

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- The U.S. House Thursday voted to restrict eligibility for Medicaid, insurance exchanges and other aspects of President Obama's healthcare reform legislation.

The House approved H.R. 2576, 262-157, with the help of 26 Democrats and the support of the Obama administration, The Hill reported.

The Congressional Budget Office has said as many as 1 million people could be affected by the restrictions, which, among other things, would include Social Security benefits as income in determining eligibility.

White House support for H.R. 2576 is seen by many as an acknowledgement that the healthcare law passed last year overextended eligibility for government programs.

there is more to it than that. It will have the effect of increasing health care funding by $11 billion.

Boehner and Republicans know they have to do something because the pressure is on. They don't have much else to go on, and the pressure is going to increase.

235 GOPers voted for the bill, zero GOPers opposed it and 6 did not vote.

27 Dems voted for the bill and 157 opposed it.

Obama has joined the 235 GOPers and is supporting this bill.

...was the other bill that passed today.

The problem was discussed ad nauseum in June.

Millions of middle-class people could get Medicaid

Democrats would just as soon leave it, but, as with the repeal of the withholding they passed into law, Republicans are banking on people having short memories. They get to act like they're doing something by repackaging the President's proposals.

And I imagine the vast majority of our Dems are idiots, in your mind, as they voted against this bill.

Now, if you want to tell me that the support of the White House is largely exaggerated, it is one thing. But this bill hurts people.

Stupid law in fact. Too bad you cant tell me the WH did not in fact agree to this. This would have been a good news. And I thank my congressman to have voted NO. Good man.

I read the report and it is very useful. BUt it pretty much says it is a bad law.

...increases costs? It's increasing health care spending for the right purpose. The fact that the bill fixes something the administration saw as a glitch is not a bad thing. The fact that Democrats voted against it is not a bad thing either. They simply disagree with the fix. It's not the first time, especially on Medicaid. Most Democrats don't approve of the administration's effort to strengthen federal authority over the program

But what he did is support a republican bill and republican congress over the Democrats in congress.

As opposed to Congress voting against funding to close Guantanamo or to advance that crazy foreclosure bill that the President vetoed?

The problem is that some people seem to focus all their outrage on the President, even when the Republicans are trying to dupe them.

So do you stand with the president and the entirety of the republican members of congress on this, or do you support the Democratic causcus? Which side do you stand on here? republicans or Democrats? We know which side the president chose.

...weren't you talking instances in which the President and Congressional Democrats don't agree? Also, the OP is about Medicaid.

Did you agree with Democrats when they voted against the Guantanamo funding?

On edit, this was something the President said he was going to fix back in June (clever Republicans?)

And yes. I think Guantanamo should have been closed. I'm a Democrat. That's how Democrats voted.

In this case the Democrats voted in the favor of Medicaid. The president supported the republicans in voting against it.

And your on edit would seem to say that the president sought to cut Medicaid and that then sought the republicans help in doing so. That surely isn't right.

and you missed the part where you tell me if you think the republicans were right on this vote or whether you side with the republican congress. I said how I feel. Straight up. No hemming, hawing or conditional phrases. Could you possibly do the same?

27. Gee, I thought one of the big selling points of the Profit Protection Act

was that it expanded access to Medicaid but I can't say I'm surprised to hear that's being cut back. At least the insurance companies are still protected :sarcasm:
