Siena NY poll: Obama, Ratings Up, Beats All Republicans by 25-37 Points

Loudonville, NY. President Obama‟s favorability and job performance ratings edged up this month, as he has expanded his lead over six potential Republican opponents to at least 25 points, according to a new Siena College Research Institute poll of registered New York voters released today. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney leads the field for the Republican nomination for President, although he has the support of less than one-third of Republicans. However, nearly half of New York Republicans say he would be the strongest challenger against Obama, and 57 percent think he will win the nomination.

“President Obama may be facing a difficult national electorate as we move closer to 2012, however, he does not appear to have any problems in „blue‟ New York,” said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg. “His favorability is the highest it has been since July, he is back over 50 percent on the generic re-elect for the first time since June, and he leads Romney by 25 points, with five other Republicans finishing even further back.”

Obama has a 57-40 percent favorability rating (up from 55-43 percent last month) and a 43-57 percent job performance rating (up from 38-62 percent). Fifty-one percent are prepared to re-elect the President, compared to 42 percent who prefer „someone else‟ (up from 48-45 percent).

“While Obama gets at least 82 percent of Democrats and a majority of independents against each of the Republicans, currently only Romney, among the six, has the support of at least 70 percent of Republicans,” Greenberg said. “And Obama has majority support in every region of the state against all six.
