If Romney's the GOP nominee I think they will have an intensity problem
Look at all the polls this year. One front runner after another. The GOP just doesn't want to have Mittens. If he is the nominee, polls indicate that he is the toughest challenger Obama could have, but I have to wonder if the tea partiers and others will look outside on election day and say, 'It's raining. I think I'll stay home.'

2. They will crawl through broken glass to vote for a ham sandwich
... if it means getting rid of President Obama.

The intensity is there. Just negative intensity, not positive.

10. Remember
Many on our side hated Bush yet that wasn't enough to vote him out In 2004.Yes dirty tricks In Ohio helped but still. Many Republicans don't like Romney.Which Is why he
can't break 25 percent In polls and we have had string of antiRomney front runners on Republican side.

11. Romney is a Mormon - Obama is the anti-christ ...

I have SO many really good friends and acquaintances who are Rs.

I just had a discussion at the gym today with an R who has supported me in local races.

We got talking politics and he went on about how he can't stand when Obama says "god bless, america."

I didn't get that, and he explained it came down to abortion. He knows Obama can't do anything about it, but it just is disturbing to him that a democrat in the presidency, who by party affiliation supports choice, can say he is a christian ... His upbringing with the church ...

I get this from A LOT of my good republican friends who otherwise are really, really good people.

Nice guy, good guy. But, VERY republican at the national level.

I DO agree that it will be sort of McCainish with the "enthusiasm" and not Wish.

But, they sort of collectively bagged on 2008 because even though they would not admit it, they KNEW they owned 2000 to 2008 and the worst presidency of our lives. But, they now have mentally transfered all of the mess Obama is trying to CLEAN UP to him and absolved themselves, and are full out feeling the anger of not having the presidency, which they feel only someone from their own party has a right to hold.

BO has the incumbency, which IS a factor.

Romney is the most formidable candidate they have, either way.

I don't think we can really get a sense of how it is going to play out for another 8-9 months, though.

18. The GOP is going to have a faith problem no doubt if Romney is the one...
Edited on Wed Nov-23-11 06:41 PM by ellisonz
...many are just too doctrinaire to accept a Mormon.

On the abortion issue - there's been about 50 million abortions since Roe v. Wade. Would they support having their taxes raised to support these children or would they just look the other way and let them live in poverty.

They're schizophrenic on the issues.

19. Intellectual incoherance is nothing
to Rs ...

Again, whatever problem they have with Mormons, a democratic president = the spawn of the devil.

To a man and woman, no R can see past themselves on nearly any aspect beyond what they have been indoctrinated to.

Can't have the the precious tax dollars of the ultra wealthy pay for prenatal vitamins, but nothing is more sacred than the unborn ...

3. I think they'll have an evangelical problem.
Edited on Wed Nov-23-11 12:54 PM by phleshdef
I'm not saying the evangelicals are going to go vote for the "baby killing, Socialist Muslim", but in their eyes, Mormons might be worse because of their co-opting of Christianity, its considered blasphemous in those circles. That might not be a very enthusiastic voting block at all in 2012.

4. I think we need to focus on taking Romney out of the running now, not later
The time to go after him with ads and investigative news stories is now. Republicans will view him differently in the general, as the alternative will not be a more conservative voice but a more liberal one. Gops hate Obama with an intense passion. I think Romney will be hard to beat in the general election, as he is very, very slick and as slippery as the hair goop on his head.

What I'd like to see are polls of Republicans to see how many will come out to vote. If a high perventage come out in the primaries, it means they are motivated for 2012 and will probably, in the end, vote for anyone who is not Obama.

6. Is Romney really going to be a tough challenger for Obama if he is the nominee?
Edited on Wed Nov-23-11 01:31 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
Will he be able to sell the public on his vision (wait, what IS his vision anyway) for the country if elected and/or convince enough people that President Obama has been a failure? He may be the *toughest* candidate (other than Huntsman) the GOP has this election cycle to challenge President Obama but, going toe to toe with President Obama, how is Romney going to stack up? With the economy still dragging, how many people are going to demand that we adopt the kind of austerity measures the Republicans are proposing, including major changes to Social Security and Medicare? The only way for the Republicans to win next year that I can see is for them to be able to successfully sell their revisionist alternate history of 2009-2012 to enough people.

7. A Third-Party candidate will come forth.
One of the nutcase candidates like Cain will garner enough money and attention from the fringe Teabag haters to siphon votes from Romney.

9. 11 months and counting. Tick Tick, Tick
With all the stupid clown tricks going on with the GOP lately, it will be a miracle at this point(no matter who they get), if they will ever have a chance against Obama. Many people may not like Obama, but he's no clown. I can only imagine what the circus will look like over the next 11 months. It's all about me, me, me, screwing the middle class, and lies, lies, lies. IE: Perry and Romney's first ads. How anyone can vote republican, and their self destructing views/policies, is beyond comprehension.

"Representatives for leading social conservative groups met covertly in Iowa Monday with the hope of choosing an alternative candidate that social conservatives could unite behind"

Unbelievable..but entertaining nonetheless!

16. No--I think one advantage Republicans have over us is that their hatred is
a powerful motivator. They might be lukewarm about Romney, but they are blazing hot about Obama (and about liberals). They hate him (and us) with the fire of a thousand suns.

Unfortunately, compared to the RWers' passion, liberals are relatively tepid in their desire to prevent a total buffoon, nutcase, or evil SOB from getting into a position of power. Too many liberals believe it's not worth their time to, as they consider it, vote for the lesser of two evils.

I think the lesser of two evils is always worth my time, since the greater of two evils is likely to be scary]/i] evil (!), though I think those who consider Obama "evil" (even a "lesser" evil) are pretty far out there.

17. they fell in line for McCain - the base will do as they're told
once FOX tells them that Mitt is the one, they'll have to problems with him.
you've already seen the beginnings of the attempt to control the wingnut 'grassroots." you hardly ever hear them promote he tea party anymore. that was fine for the establishment in an off-year race, but now they're pulling the rug out from under them so they can run a general election, presidential campaign.
