Kyl: We’ll Only Extend Payroll Tax Cut If You Extend Bush Cuts Too
Top Republican: We’ll Only Extend Payroll Tax Cut If You Extend Bush Cuts Too
Brian Beutler-December 5, 2011, 5:45 PM3955

The top Republican vote counter in the Senate says extending the expiring payroll tax holiday is a terrible idea and he’ll only do it if Democrats agree to major concessions — in particular, simultaneously extending all the Bush tax cuts, which are scheduled to expire just over a year from now.

On the Senate floor Monday, Sen. Jon Kyl argued that reducing the payroll tax doesn’t stimulate the economy — a claim most economists disagree with — and criticized the Democrats’ plan to offset the cost of the tax holiday with a small surtax on millionaires.

“We should therefore only do it under circumstances that in effect override these objections, one of which would be to extend all of the taxes that expire at the end of next year — at the end of 2012,” Kyl said. “That would be a good idea.”

In November 2009, Kyl felt differently. On CNBC he argued, “What you’re suggesting here is that you can do some things to stimulate job creation and certainly doing something like reducing the payroll tax, which has been written about recently, would accomplish that.”

6. Stop with the tax cuts already! How do you think we got in this situation in the first place?
Don't let bu$h's tax cut expire. End them NOW!
The payroll tax cuts were and still are a very bad idea whose time has not and never will come.
All the are doing is diddling with the symptoms and doing absolutely nothing to remedy the root cause.
Get our Living Wage Jobs back into this country and put our own people back to work making the stuff we buy and use.

Congress critters are like kids fighting over the favorite toys while the house burns down. Knock it off already.

13. Big Fail is right.. You read the first sentence and stopped reading.
Taxes on the middle class have already been cut though the loss of our Living Wage Jobs. The bu$h tax cuts need to be receded, along with the payroll tax cuts. The payroll tax cuts will come back to bite us down the road. We either pay in now or we will not have enough later and that will be used as an excuse to cut back Social Security and Medicare even further.
The fix is to raise taxes so the federal government has some discretionary money to spend on Main Street now for a change, to get the economy going again. If you do not have a Living Wage Job, you are not to have worry about paying much in the way in taxes in the first place.

12. We should tell him, that we will extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich right after ...
Kyl demonstrates the flexibility to F**K himself, on TV, prior to a GOP debate.

14. Considering the average payroll tax cut is less than $2k Screw you Kyl
It seems most fiscally responsible to let both tax cuts expire.
