New TSA rules will be proven unworkable I give it about 5 days!
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Some airlines were telling passengers on Saturday that new government security regulations prohibit them from leaving their seats beginning an hour before landing

The regulations are a response to a suspected terrorism incident on Christmas Day.

Air Canada said in a statement that new rules imposed by the Transportation Security Administration limit on-board activities by passengers and crew in U.S. airspace. The airline said that during the final hour of flight passengers must remain seated. They won't be allowed access to carryon baggage or to have any items on their laps.

Flight attendants on some domestic flights are informing passengers of similar rules. Passengers on a flight from New York to Tampa Saturday morning were also told they must remain in their seats and couldn't have items in their laps, including laptops and pillows

Business people working on laptops will have a fit.
People can't pee for the last hour of the flight is just utterly unworkable

It is a gross overreach and you juast watch watch the absolutely vitriolic reaction.

1. Yup, people are already fuming...Read the comments page at the NYT here

An amateurish overreaction by the TSA. Hopefully, they back down.

2. Also reports of some flights to US disallowing electronic devices completely

Seems like the terrorists are winning when we respond like crazy fucks to these inept bomb plans. Might as well outlaw carry on luggage at this point.

9. Or seats, for that matter
Just knock us out, stuff us in convenient-sized transfer pods, and shove those into the hold.

You gotta admit, it'd be pleasant compared to flying these days.

3. So what happens on flights that are an hour or less?
Edited on Sat Dec-26-09 10:53 PM by rainbow4321
Or 1.5 hours, for that matter.
Guess you just have to use the bathroom right before you get on but going by these new rules once you are seated, you can't stand up again til you are getting off the plane? Good luck to the parents of a little kid who doesn't feel the "have to go" urge before they board the plane.
As far as not getting anything from the overhead baggage area or having anything in your lap, they gonna let a dirty diaper clad baby scream for an hour cuz mom/dad can't reach for a clean diaper or go to the bathroom to change that diaper?

I can think of a lot of other scenarios that will lead to the TSA having to suspend the rules for a passenger. And if you let one passenger slip thru a loophole, others will be going "excuse me, you let THAT person...."
I give it a few weeks and they will quietly change these new rules.

13. You can't get up on those flights anyway

You already couldn't get up until cruising altitude, or a half hour before landing.

I want to hear, for real, what you've been doing on an hour flight.

8. How about we complain about how they charge you $25 to check your bag instead
I can't believe how compliant people are when the airlines decide they are going to charge travelers--who by definition have baggage--extra money to check their bags. So now old ladies have to pay the money or risk an osteoporitic break trying to lift it into the overhead. Not a peep from people about this. It's extortion, and it's discriminatory towards certain classes of people.

But god forbid after a documented attempt to blow up a plane they try to induce a little extra safety. I doubt these are going to be permanent rules ... temporary until they can get screening procedures better. Can we please stop wringing our hands about the poor businessmen and worrying about how we are going to hold our pee for a full hour?

10. The main purpose of the attack was to foul holiday air travel.
Mission Accomplished.

The good news is it was a very weak attack, and it suggests the AQ effort has gone awry.
