1. I don't think the moderators were concerned about insensitivity toward crypto-racists.

They were concerned about DUers from the South.

I must admit a fair amount of ambivalence here. We don't want to broad-brush southerners. But we also don't want to candy-coat the history of this country. I think it probably could have stayed open, but unfortunately the mods were put in a tough situation.
