Thousands march to demand US immigration reform
LOS ANGELES — Thousands of immigrants poured into the streets of Los Angeles on Sunday to demand that President Barack Obama fulfill his campaign promise to legalize millions of undocumented immigrants.

"Legalization or no re-election!" chanted the demonstrators participating in protest on May Day protest, a holiday mostly ignored in the United States.

Most were immigrants from Central America and Mexico demanding the immigration reform Obama has promised for some of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States to gain legal status.

Organizers said 10,000 immigrants protested downtown, while the Los Angeles Police Department put the crowd's numbers at 3,500.

11. That is true and a lot of those groups deserve sympathy and restitution.

Illegal immigrants, however, are not on the list.

paying those onerous taxes to return to the place from whence they came, complete the required paperwork, and then come back. They do have the absolute right to return to their country of origin, but by virtue of their illegal status obviously choose to remain exploited.

without any idea about the hardship and risk it would entail, even if returning to Mexico would in any way help them achieve legality.

It's mindboggling.

And no, these low income workers did not decide to pass NAFTA and wreck their own agi sector or to fund the fake drug war that has turned Mexico into a haven for gangs. They didn't choose any of that. Washington did that.

It used to be the immigrants I talked to were happy to be here. They had a choice and they made it, and they came here. Not any more. I can't remember the last time I talked to a recent immigrant from Mexico that wanted to be here at all.

15. You say immigrants are not happy to be here, yet they still come in
droves, every year. Legally and illegally.

According to some articles, 11 million of the illegal variety have accumulated. Some sneaked across the border, others have had their permits expire, but even those are now here illegally.

10. Right. That's what those civil rights protesters did in the south back in the 50's and 60's.

Can you believe that they even demanded the right to vote?

Always making demands want this and wanting that. They should go out and work for what they get just like the good folks on Wall Street.

Don't hear them complaining much!

Damn comminists I say!

16. You should watch the movie...
"Which Way Home." You can stream it from netflix. I defy most thinking, feeling, sentient human beings to watch it and not be moved that some major humanitarian effort needs to occur, and quickly.

If you watch it, and still feel so little, kudos. You're not a person I ever want to cross paths with.

3. Well, Reagan gave the first amnesty, and Obama is clearly quite a Reagan fan policy-wise.
So I'm guessing their odds are pretty good.
Too bad for the rest of us - FAR RW policy is
more important. Gotta break those Unions and
lower wages any way possible!

4. That's backwards. Keeping these people "illegal" is breaking unions
not the other way around.

17. Great point and it's why conservatives favor "attrition through enforcement". It leaves millions of
exploitable workers here indefinitely.

American labor unions know this. That's why they support some form of "legalization" to deal with this large number of workers with no rights. They know that forcing American employers to comply with the law is only one part of a comprehensive solution.

5. Was reading through yesterday's Anonymous but not Anonymous dump re: Chamber of Commerce, Mackinac..

ALEC. Seems COC is very interested in Immigration Reform also.

I stand on the side that those here should have a way to make their presence here legal. I also think that business big and small should not hire illegal or undocumented (not sure what the correct term would be) immigrants and should be severely punished if caught doing so as well as more aggressive enforcement of our present laws.

But now I'm finding myself wondering why would the Chamber of Commerce be so aggressive in THEIR agenda to push Immigration Reform. Lots of pro Immigration Reform propaganda in that release. In fact I'm thinking about it so hard that now I'm wondering what's really in it for them and their sleazebag members.

Is it the stopped clock is right twice a day thing (COC pushing IR) or is there something else we should be worried about here?

ETA:

Think I just found anxiety relief in this post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1002305 - Immigrants and unions united to fight cutbacks and demand jobs.

If the unions get involved and brings immigrants under their collective wing, it will leave no room for the greedy to take advantage of all workers.
