Zeolites useful for removing radiation from the body

Belated release of radiation forecast data

The Japanese government is about to begin releasing data projecting the spread of radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant that it initially withheld for fear of causing panic. The data in question is in a computer system called SPEEDI that predicts the spread of radioactive substances based on actual radiation measurements at various locations and weather conditions.

A joint task force of the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company says about 5,000 undisclosed bits of data will be released from Tuesday...

...Hosono said the task force withheld the information because some data were based on overly rigorous assumptions and feared it may trigger panic.

But he said the task force now believes that panic can be avoided if it offers proper explanations on the projections. He also promised to promptly release all such data in the future. Hosono said the task force will carry out a monthly check of how TEPCO is proceeding with its plan to bring the nuclear crisis under control. The utility firm announced a recovery roadmap on April 17th that calls for stabilizing the situation in 6 to 9 months.

Radiation forecast data released

The Japanese government has released data projecting the spread of radioactive substances from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The science ministry uses a computer system called SPEEDI to predict how radiation will spread depending on weather and geographical conditions.

On Tuesday, the government released about 5,000 bits of data showing hourly predictions from March 11th. The information appears on the websites of the Nuclear Safety Commission and other entities.

The data was calculated on the assumption that radioactive substances are being released at a rate of one becquerel per hour. The data for 10 p.m. on March 15th, when an explosion occurred at the No.2 reactor, shows radiation flowing out of the screen to the northeast. Such data had been withheld for fear of causing panic.

Goshi Hosono, secretary general of the joint task force set up by the government and the Tokyo Electric Power Company, apologized on Monday for the delay in releasing the data. He said that he now believes that panic can be avoided if proper explanations are offered. Hosono promised to release data promptly in the future.

"Some of the shareholders of a Japanese electric power company say they want the utility to close its nuclear power plants.

On Monday, a group of 232 individual stockholders of Tohoku Electric Power Company submitted the documents needed for their proposal to scrap its nuclear power plants.

The proposal is expected to be put to a vote in an annual shareholders' meeting at the end of next month.

Tohoku Electric Power has 2 nuclear power plants in Japan's northeastern region, one in Higashidori Village in Aomori Prefecture and another in Onagawa Town in Miyagi Prefecture...."

Dying for TEPCO

While Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) experiences difficulties in recruiting workers willing to go to Fukushima to clean up the damaged reactors, the World Health Organization (WHO) is planning to conduct an epidemiological survey on the catastrophe. This is the first of two reports offering a worker-centered analysis of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

In the titanic struggle to bring to closure the dangerous situation at Fukushima Nuclear Plant No1, there are many signs that TEPCO is facing great difficulties in finding workers. At present, there are nearly 700 people at the site. As in ordinary times, workers rotate so as to limit the cumulative dose of radiation inherent in maintenance and cleanup work at the nuclear site. But this time, the risks are greater, and the method of recruitment unusual.

Job offers come not from TEPCO but from Mizukami Kogyo, a company whose business is construction and cleaning maintenance. The description indicates only that the work is at a nuclear plant in Fukushima prefecture. The job is specified as three hours per day at an hourly wage of 10,000 yen (about US$122). There is no information about danger, only the suggestion to ask the employer for further details on food, lodging, transportation and insurance.

Those who answer these offers may have little awareness of the dangers and they are likely to have few other job opportunities. A rate of $122 an hour is hardly a king's ransom given the risk of cancer from high radiation levels. But TEPCO and the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) keep diffusing their usual propaganda to minimize the radiation risks...

Apparently this situation also has generated rumors of exploitation of lower class workers, "burakumin," (a minority group dating from Japan's feudal era and still often associated with discrimination).

I am surprised all our nuke cheerleaders at DU aren't considering putting in their applications. They are all such experts about the dangers.

The danger from the Japanese nuclear crisis is not over

As nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen notes, 7 weeks after the Japanese earthquake, Chernobyl wasn't emitting any gas or liquids, yet Fukushima still is:

The Fukushima reactors are still emitting radioactive steam, and spilling high levels of radiation into the Pacific ocean. indeed, the Japanese are nowhere close to stopping radiation release.

Gundersen also suspects that the explosion at reactor number 3 was a nuclear explosion, where the initial hydrogen explosion triggered a "prompt criticality" which spewed radiation high into the air...

My suggestion is that in this instance, Americans should pay attention not to themselves, but rather to helping the Japanese overcome a truly hazardous situation that may take years or even decades to resolve. SANTIAGO, Chile —
Customs agents in Chile have detected low levels of radioactivity in cars shipped from the Japanese port of Yokohama.

Chile says the radioactivity was found in 21 of nearly 2,500 cars that arrived in Iquique aboard the Hyundai 106 cargo ship.

About a hundred port workers have protested, saying their health was at risk.

But Chilean deputy treasury secretary Miguel Angel Quesada said Monday that the Chilean nuclear commission has confirmed that the radioactivity is too low to cause damage to humans. He says the cars will be hosed down on board and any radioactivity will be contained inside inside the ship.

This is the first Japanese shipment to Chile to show radioactivity since Japan's massive earthquake and nuclear disaster.
