Poll question: Would you like the White House to release photos &/or video of OBL's corpse?
This thread is not about "I think he's been dead for years" or "I think he's still alive somewhere" or any of that, just the question in the subject line. There are other threads for those if you want to go there.

Would you like the White House to release photos &/or video of OBL's corpse?

1. The White House has far more brainpower than I do...
Edited on Tue May-03-11 03:35 PM by JuniperLea
I won't look at them if I can avoid it, but I have no desire one way or the other on their release... I don't see the point, but as I said, I don't know all of the circumstances and I have no right to dictate.

That said, one thing I'm really hating right now is the thought and emotion police being out in full force on DU. Nunnayagoddambidnis what another person finds celebration worthy, what they find emotionally cleansing, or how they feel about any of this. STFU to all who profess to be God with all knowing powers and sensibilities beyond their fellow humankind.

28. It's a political discussion board. A rough and tumble public square
Edited on Wed May-04-11 02:18 AM by chill_wind
of course, bawdy political expression and strongly held opinion. If you're coming to DU to spout the same as everyone else, it's a little absurd to partake, and then to complain at various reaction and to expect some sort of "emotional privacy" on the topics you're voluntarily discussing.

The only way it stays "nunnaygoddambidnis" on a public discussion board is if you don't want it to be, and don't publicly put it out there in the first place for reaction and consumption. If it's too much for you, hit the ignore, including me, and hide the threads. I assure you I won't be offended.

4. Other. Theere should be respect for Islamic practices regarding the dead, however,
that respect should not preclude verification by respected, vetted journalists and possibly UN leaders and diplomats.

Or something.

But no, I don't think the general 6-packer public should be privvy to them.

10. They don't have to do it on my account
I know I won't look even if in the end they do release them or they're leaked out.

I find it disturbing that anyone would want to view them. I could see if heads of state from other countries wanted to see the evidence, and our own politicians as well. Then they could verify that he's dead to the rest of the world. Yet, we live in a society where the media gives attention to idiots like the "birthers." I can only imagine the feigned outrage this is going to generate. :(

11. Yes. I believe "secrets" are rarely worth the cost
I do not accept the premise that we require our leaders to suppress information, nor the concept that they can handle things that I cannot. I don't particularly care about the pics, as I believe them in this case, but that's irrelevant. Release them ALL.

13. When the chorus of "You're not telling us the truth!" "What are you hiding?" reaches a crescendo
then release some official documentation of his death - post mortem photos, DNA, stills from the interment-at-sea. It doesn't need to be everything but enough to convince a halfway sensible person.

If you don't wait until you're "forced to" release documentation, the same people who will be screaming you aren't leveling with us about "what really happened" will be screaming that you are barbarically parading OBL's body around to humiliate his followers, etc.

only because I think that this president is only ever believed when he shows every ounce of proof possible. I'd like this country to take his word at face value.. you know, just like they did with "W" when he claimed "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and no questions were asked of that...

15. No. What needed to be done is done. No need to desecrate anyone's body
or to humiliate anyone's supporters.

We need to act more civilised than they did.

I didn't even like all the rejoicing. I'm glad he is gone, but a death should never be a reason to rejoice. Doing so makes us as bad as those who rejoiced on 9/11.

17. "No need to desecrate (bin Laden's) body or to humiliate (bin Laden's) supporters."
:wtf:

If you're referring to some other famous body the US was in custody of and their supporters, do tell. I'm fine with OBL's supporters being humiliated- I didn't honestly think there was much controversy on that sentiment.

One way or another, pictures in all their gory glory will find their way out there.

For many years, broadcasters wouldn't air the few frames of the Zapruder film that showed the spray of blood and brain matter that erupted when the fatal shot hit JFK. But that was then. This is now.

...Like the World Trade Center towers crumbling, a fireman holding a tiny baby's body in front of what little is left of the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, a stack of starved corpses in a German concentration camp..
Much as I wish I'd never seen any of these things, I think I can take pictures of a gunshot victim.

The CIA chief wants them out, so they'll leak, regardless of his boss's wishes.

But if anyone thinks the deathers will accept the photos and stfu, I don't think so. They will cry Photoshop, Staged, and Madame Toussaud, until there is a white man in the oval office.

I would prefer that photos be made available for viewing by the department heads of whatever media wants to send them..and no recordings or duplicates be made./. Let them watch the tapes of the mission and view the pics, and then they can deal with the unbelievers...and the gruesome pics don't end up online, where they can be reproduced over & over for propaganda purposes..
