Teacher Tells 9th Grade Muslim Girl, "I Bet You're Grieving"
"A Texas high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave following an incident where he allegedly told a 9th grade Muslim girl in his algebra class "I bet that you're grieving" on Monday following the death of Osama bin Laden.

According to one parent at Clear Brook High School in Houston who spoke about the incident to a local ABC affiliate, the teacher also said, "I heard about your uncle's death."

The parent said the student "understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her."

"When the girl began crying, the teacher asked why. When another student told the teacher it was because of what he said, he apparently 'smirked and giggled' before walking away."

1. Fire and replace. I've been teaching 3 decades, and this is beyond the pale.
Texas is an at-will employment state, so there should be no problem.

Shame!

33. I made no comment about the infallibility of progressives.
We can and should be self critical, but being so has no impact on how this man's actions are judged. We don't need to take a look at our own side "before" condemning. The two are separate events, and not related.

52. no one said anything about progressives being perfect
and I think looking at one's own weaknesses and failings can be a good thing, but that sure as shit doesn't mean that something like this asshole's comments shouldn't be condemned. doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

34. There is no tenure in Texas. I'm not guessing. I've taught here 3 decades.
You either get offered a new contract for the next year around April 15 or not. No reason need be given. After contract is offered, may be let go due to reduction in force, reduction in program, misconduct, conviction of any felony and most misdemeanors, suspension of teaching certificate, moral turpitude (which is what this is), and a raft of others.

53. One of the few talking points I can agree with...
I've had a lot of awful teachers in my day that just didn't need to be teachers. They were only in it for the paycheck. Incentives work... and bad teachers will have no reason to perform or not be complete assholes like this guy without the incentive of employment.

57. Although there are many problems with at will employment...I say EXCELLENT!
Giving people the comfort of doing and saying whatever they wish at no risk of losing anything is preposterous.

All teachers should excel and be greatly compensated for their adequate performance. People like this man are not teachers and should be discarded as such; not given a teaching job simply for the sake of their livelihood.

41. One bad teacher gets all the attention. So there are bigots
in the world, and we are supposed to be surprised. I bet that all over the country there were teachers like myself who spoke about what happened in a mature and thoughtful way that left the students feeling better informed without hurting anyone's feelings. It is people like that one teacher who gives all educators a bad name. Judging from how he handled the entire situation, this was not the first time he acted like an ass.
