Carson soldiers fight daylong Afghanistan battle

Fort Carson soldiers turned back the opening round of the long-promised spring offensive by Taliban fighters in a daylong battle Saturday in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

The city is held by soldiers from the post’s 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division, which is wrapping up a year of service in Afghanistan.

No Americans were killed or wounded in the fighting, which included Taliban attempts to capture the governor’s compound and a police headquarters in Kandahar and firefights throughout the region. As many as six insurgents wearing suicide vests died along with the drivers of several vehicle-born bombs and two Taliban gunmen. Nineteen civilians, including six women and three children were hospitalized after the attacks.

The brigade’s Maj. Earl Brown, in a telephone interview from Afghanistan, said U.S. troops and Afghan police and military units have been gearing up for the fight.
