Has anybody talked to people from other countries about the bin Laden death?
I talked to two people today who worked in the news media in two different European countries and they had the same reaction:

There has been so much propaganda about bin Laden and al Qaeda and they know the media is willingly spoonfed so much PR and propaganda in general that they aren't sure what, if anything, happened, and what it's significance might be.

That was more or less my first reaction too, though I put a more positive spin on it: it will be just about impossible to justify the War on Terror after this.

I was a bit surprised to hear that because even in semi-lefty forums like this those views are shouted down as conspiracy theories.

I'm wondering what other people have heard about it from their friends in other countries.

1. I hear no such thing at all.
What 'news media' organizations and countries are you speaking of? What sort of work do your friends do in those organizations?

13. So you know people from other countries that think our news media is trustworthy or even ''news''?
I'll ask my friends who they worked for the next time I see them.

2. That it is a good thing the bastard is dead
of course that is Mexico.

And by the way... even AQ now is saying he was killed in the raid.

So if you wanted confirmation...

That said, this will make staying in Afghanistan harder.

7. It will make staying in Afghanistan easier. It justifies our 10 year war.
Now we have to get the rest of "Al Qaeda" which also often means the Taliban in US media, which often means paid mercenaries fighting with no ideology whatsoever.

The assassination of Bin Laden, if true, which it probably is--but who knows the actual circumstances of his death without an independent media-- will be a big fat nothing in the course of historical events. We will stay in Afghanistan and move to wherever else we want to be in the Middle East. The US doctrine is nothing less than to take over and "democratize" the Middle East. Al Qaeda is just a pretext. The Taliban will do just as well. Most Americans don't know the difference anyway as they are treated identically in the propaganda matrix we call "news."

8. Looking at our track record
what you're saying makes sense. People seem to think Bin Laden's death will change things. Remains to be seen. But I'm not hopeful.

6. A friend in Canada was appalled at the scenes of the celebrations.
She didn't think it was appropriate to celebrate someone's death.

9. It's not. But try telling that to the empathetically challenged bleeding heart Liberals here.

11. I agree with her! I don't think the death of any man is a reason to rejoice
But it had to be done, and I am proud of our SEALs, and happy that President Obama selected a "surgical strike" rather than a much messier and bloodier invasion of Pakistan!

10. That the death of Ben Laden is a positive thing, and that Obama's
decision making and strenght of character, as well as the way he used "surgical strike" rather than "a big hammer" demonstrate what a great leader he is. Usually people are relieve that Bush was not in charge when this event happened, or it may have led to more blood!
