Raise your hand if you are employed and got a raise this past year.
ABC just reported that CEOs enjoyed an 11% increase in compensation during that time. My husband not only did not get a raise but was given a mandatory layoff days periodically. How did you fare?

5. I got a whopping
.25 an hour which brings my total hourly wage to $14.00 an hour. I'm an older guy and had to get out of construction due to the downturn.

This is the lowest amount I've made in about 30 years of working. I'm going to invest it in derivatives and cdos.

Look out world.

about $20 every two weeks. but they also keep going back and forth with the overtime. they will say they don't want any overtime and then will be begging people to work some overtime. lol. they don't have enough people in this area.

34. well he is on call once a month for a week. they got rid of some overtime by
making them take two days off during the week and working straight time on weekends. so when on call my husband has to work sat and sun straight time and is the only one working in the whole area. he still ends up with overtime when he has calls he has to run. but he tries to avoid overtime because we are on the state health insurance and barely under the cap. if they could count on the overtime it wouldn't be such a big deal, but it's no given.

11. Retired, not working. But I was offered a part time job at the gym.
During my workout, between sets I tidy up the place rather than just rest/recover. Straighten the dumbbell racks, strip the bars, move plates around so all the benches have the same number of each size plates, etc.

The day manager suggested I work part time doing the same thing, and get paid for it.

"No thanks. Then I'd have to do it and it wouldn't be fun."

Closest I've come to having a job in several years.

15. 1% "Cost of Living" increase went out company-wide
Not that I am complaining, but when I was hired in 2005 I was told that there was a 2%-10% "Merit Increase" every year in addition to the COLA, with the average employee getting 7% every year. I got 4% after my first year, nothing since, and my annual reviews have been stellar. I have gotten several promotions, but they are simply changes in title accompanied by a lot more responsibility - but basically the same pay.

17. My employer
Has actually treated me and the other employees pretty good, we cut a few jobs at the start of the recession, but have since hired all but 1 back. And im guessing that the one they haven't hired back yet has found another job because we have hired 2 new people as well. Also, since we have started getting more and more busier, they have lessened the load on each employee. And have been giving raises every quarter for the last 2 years. The owner of this small business is a good man.

Haven't had a real job since 2001. A 50+ with health problems isn't going to get hired. In a year I can get on SS. I hope to hold out until then. At least the house is paid off-that saves me about $600 in expenses even with what I have to set aside for taxes and insurance.

25. My husband survived layoffs last week.
He's in pharmaceutical manufacturing and he's making $35,000/yr. less than a decade ago and hasn't had a "raise" in over 4 years (he was laid off for part of that time and doing contracting work after that before being permanently hired). He's a mechanical engineer with a master's in engineering management with qualifications and certifications galore.

I got a whopping 2%. Though I haven't gotten a raise in the previous 3 years to that.

Though, now the bank I work for is (Finally!) out of FDIC receivership and making a profit, I hope to see more of this.

My bonuses are still really good and I earned another week of vacation this year so I really can't complain. I'm better off than alot of people right now and am thankful for where I'm at.

43. Raise and bonus...
Edited on Mon May-09-11 10:38 AM by JuniperLea
Mainly because I took over many duties when someone left the firm, and because my review reads: "constantly exceeds expectations."

Last year was a big year... 10% raise, then an 11% bonus six months later. I don't expect that every year. We skipped a couple regularly scheduled raises, and the bonus pool was smaller in the past few years. It's nice when a boss tries to make that up to employees.

The coolest thing is I'm getting my department head-count increased, so I'm going to be hiring another person this year. I feel really good about creating another job and putting someone back to work!

Things are really looking up... I blame Obama!

47. Better Than Average, Luckily
After being laid-off from a "dream job" working for an education non-profit in 2009, I found a good, new job after four months of searching. My annual salary increase was 3,000, about a 4.2% increase (just over cost of living).

I'd much rather still be working at the non-profit but donation based non-profits got killed in the heart of the recession years so I understand their position. Out of 47 staffers, six were laid off and the organization has only replaced one of those jobs in the 18 months that followed my layoff.

Edited on Mon May-09-11 12:10 PM by mike_c
...due to state budget problems. I mean, it's California. We only got one annual raise of the three negotiated during our last contract, and none are on the table for the coming years during current contract negotiations. Of course, we also took a ten percent reduction last year during mandatory furloughs.
