In Columbus: More Than 100 Surveillance Cameras To Go Online This Summer
More Than 100 Surveillance Cameras To Go Online This Summer

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A public meeting is scheduled for next week how to discuss the city's plans to install 114 surveillance cameras in five neighborhoods.

The cameras will be installed along Livingston Avenue, Mount Vernon, South Linden, Weinland Park and the Hilltop area, 10TV's Kevin Landers reported.

The city will spend $2 million to install the security cameras.

George Walker, a resident in the Linden area, said that he is convinced the cameras will cause crime to vanish.

This will push crime out of that area into another, then new cameras will be installed, etc and so on.

As I have noted before on here, the cops in this area don't care about crime. They are called out here several times a week, take no reports, shrug, and basically say 'call us if you have any more problems' - put in cameras though and have a kid riding a bike without a helmet or someone loaning their neighbor a bag of oregano for their meatballs and the damn swat team will be here (versus the break ins which I see at least every two weeks, get plate numbers, etc and the cops do zip).

1. There was a report recently about these "security" cameras...
1) half of them are ever turned on.

2) the other half aren't monitored.

2. Which company profited from the sale of these cameras to Columus?

3. Back when privacy mattered...
These cameras might have been controversial back when privacy was held out as a value, and back when people held to the quaint notion that citizens should be able to go about their daily business without being constantly watched by the state.

Now people just say bring it on, and if you've nothing to hide, what's your problem?
