$404 Million of FL's high speed rail money going to the CHI - DET Route?

(This just on Tweety's show.)

Umm....

There was already a line planned to go from Chicago to Detroit. So did they decide to not fund it and instead had money going to places like Florida?

I am curious why this line needs the $400 Million from Florida and why there wasn't already money in the budget for this line.

Anyone know? ('Cause we sure could use a line down to Toledo too)

1. I wanna see a high speed line between Chicago and Milwaukee
I've always wanted to go to Wrigley north, I mean Miller Park to see the Cubs play the Brewers but they always seem to be in Milwaukee on bad weekends, but if it only takes an hour or 2 to get there I could go for the day.

2. I just want a damned train depot in Madison!
We're the State Capital, for crissakes, got a major university here, too! We have to drive 30 miles to Columbus and sit outside a train depot that's only open part-time. No buses to the depot. The only ways to get to it are private car and taxicab.

I don't care if the train is high-speed or low-speed. I just want a depot!

3. it seems that Wisconsin turned down the money also

^snip^

Walker has said he will follow through on his campaign promises to reject the project, for which the federal government has allotted $810 million in federal funding. The grant is specifically earmarked for high-speed rail, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Gov. Scott Walker wants to turn U.S. 41 into an interstate, piggybacking off the improvements already under way in Northeastern Wisconsin.

The Federal Highway Authority needs to approve the change, and Walker said he hoped an environmental study could be completed in a few years and interstate shield signs could be placed along the 142-mile stretch of highway between Green Bay and the Mitchell Interchange in Milwaukee by 2015.

"From my point of view, transportation is not just about transportation. It's about economic development," Walker said during a press conference Tuesday at the U.S. 41 Interstate Conversion Office in Green Bay. "This helps attract growth in existing businesses as well as attracting other employers to this region when they can say, 'Hey, we're right off of this interstate.'"

The state Department of Transportation will spend the next few years elevating the highway to interstate standards at a cost of $15 million to $20 million. Improvements include wider shoulders and installing cable guardrails along some medians

Yes, the road construction companies gave him a lot of money in least year's election. How did you guess?

18. Also check to see who owns real estate along that proposed upgrade.
Any land worth developing where there will be proposed interchanges will become instantly more valuable.

But thanks to Scott Walker, that won't happen.

5. Amtrak made a profit last year

I think high speed rail could replace short plane trips if done correctly.

When you consider all the time wasted in airport security now, a train might be faster than flying (for short trips).

It is more efficient than long haul trucking also. Passengers are not the only ones who would profit from improved rail service.

8. I'm going to Seattle next month...
I would have loved a fast high speed train out of Green Bay to get to Minneapolis, where my flight to Seattle departs from. And on my way back, I wouldn't have to fly all the way to fershlugginer Detroit to pick up my connection to Titletown. It would probably be cheaper, (But then again, how the airlines calculate their fees are all Greek to me.

9. No idea,
could be they had money marked for improvements but with more money they can do more improvements, buy more new cars, instead of say just upgrading the track to gain an extra 10-20mph they can push that to maybe 30-40mph.

Regardless FL's governor setback highspeed rail in that state for many years. I'll add I was less than impressed to see the map for the 'future of HS rail' seems like a good start but not what I'd call a real 'vision'.

10. Toledo?
You'd be better off just moving to Chicago...in so, so many ways. HS Rail is just a perk.

11. if you look at the map in the OP you will see the line running through Toledo
but to get to Detroit you need to go all the way to the Chicago hub.

A short run up from Toledo would cut off ~700 miles (one way) if you wanted to take a train to/from Detroit to most anywhere south or east.

13. agreed, but if it doesn't connect to the rest of the country it wouldn't
serve anyone other than citizens of Michigan.

If we want to help the tourism industry of northern Michigan then serving the people from Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania via a high speed rail line to Mackinac would be a huge bonus.
