Poll question: Who should Obama send the SEAL team after next?
It's pretty straightforward. Since the SEAL team has proved itself as a popular problem solving method, what problem should they solve next? Implicit in my question is that these targets could be taken alive if possible.

I would be happy with any of most of these.

17. Gen. McChrystal Questioned About Secret Assassination Teams
Jeremy Scahill
May 13, 2010

Midway through his press conference at the Pentagon Thursday, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the US commander referred to as "The Pope," was asked—in a rather innocuous way—about the role US special forces assassination teams are playing in Afghanistan ahead of the planned summer Kandahar offensive. A reporter raised the issue of "the role of your Special Mission Units in targeting Taliban hard-core insurgents: Are they being used in Kandahar City to go after some of these assassination teams?"

SMUs are direct action teams composed of all-star special forces operators— the elite of the elite—drawn from the Navy SEALs, Delta Force and other "Tier One" special forces, working with the Joint Special Operations Command. Since 9-11, these teams have been the premiere force in capturing or killing "high-value targets" around the world.

What would you call them?

18. If you agree with the designation 'enemy combatant' and with
the POTUS having the power to order the assassination of anyone he names as an 'enemy combatant', which it appears a lot of people here do, then it is not just an assertion that this president or any other can, we are told, lawfully, use the Seals as an assination squad to kill that person targeted by the POTUS.

Of course I don't agree with any of those Bush policies, which is why I supported Democrats. And apparently I was fooled.

I voted for 'Other,' with the thought Obama could send the SEALs to get me next for continuing to insist that we not extra-judicially assassinate anyone :)

JK, but Greenwald's latest should give us all pause:

25. I've had students ask why we don't use our military to crush Mexican drug cartels
Maybe it's because someone in government has half a brain cell left.

If you killed or captured all the current drug lord, you would simply cause a temporary surge in the price of the product through scarcity, and the potential profits would draw new dealers in to take their places.

19. "The professional left"? And also, who do these guys take alive? When ordered to, sure...
But only if they need to disappear a terrorist suspect. Look, Woodward covered this issue, he says the Bush admin bragged "it's why we're winning" the war in Iraq and told him not to report on it. So, according to Woodward's book, he refused to tell his readers anything else, lest they compromise the US gains in Iraq by revealing that Bush was lying about the surge.

22. Well, the NYT reported that the Bush gang were using the same
brutal and criminal methods used during the Reagan Admin in Central America. Murder Incorporated. Not a war, an illegal, murderous operation for which no one has yet been held accountable. I remember the reports of the bodies, clearly assassinated piling up in Iraq. It is despicable that these methods are now being used by the person I supported so that these crimes could be stopped and the criminals dealt with.

And he didn't win the war in Iraq. Iraq is a mess, its people our out in the streets protesting and being mowed down for doing so by our puppet government. Sadr is threatening to mobilize his forces again if the attacks on peaceful protestors continue.

As long as there is a US backed government there, it is not a free country. And as Manning reported, torture is still going there. We have tens of thousands of mercenaries in the country, no doubt protecting the 'businessmen' who are stealing the Iraqis blind. Over four million Iraqis are still either refugees or displaced in their own country.

Their infrastructure is destroyed and the rest of the Arab world uses Iraq to demonstrate what they do NOT want to have happen to their countries. We are hated and despised for what was done to that country, not just in the ME, but in every decent country in the world.

Winning, what does that mean? We are weakened by these criminal wars, the American people gain nothing from them, But a few, a small number of greedy, inhumane monsters do profit from them.
