Is Gingrich doing us a favor by running for president?
I'm trying to figure out why he's doing this. He's either delusional since there are Republicans who will go on record and say that he lost favor within the Republican party because he made statements to different people that didn't add up. So, I very much doubt he's a serious contender. However, he's probably going to announce he's running and I have to ask why?

Does he get to keep the money that people contribute to his campaign? If so, maybe he's just being a very sophisticated panhandler?

But, I think he's doing us a favor if he runs, because whatever money he takes in, is money that won't be going to a serious contender.

1. I can't figure out why Newt thinks he could win.
Of course, I could say that about any of the spectacularly lame republican candidates we have seen so far.

3. I have also wondered if they get to keep campaign money. Maybe someone here knows.

4. He's only after the money
Edited on Tue May-10-11 06:55 AM by madokie
He knows he's no chance of the oval office due largely to his incompetence, he knows this. Gingrich is running to run. Have you ever noticed how he gets all blown up like a toad when he's got a camera on him and someone ask him a question that he knows enough about to really bloviate. How he lays back in his chair and puts those hands on his tummy. He's just in it for the money, good or bad or indifferent it matters not to him he only wants the money. IMHO

Add: I'd say it would be good for us for him running due to he will siphon some of the money from some of the other more likely candidates. President O has this to lose as it stands today and if he keeps up using that sharp knife of his, so to say, he'll win a second term by an even larger margin. Again IMHO

Add: for us

Add one more time: Cuba Gooding jr. "Show me the money" will or should be his stated motto

5. I woulnd't underestimate simple vanity.
These guys aren't exactly famous for being closely in touch with reality or the mood of the American public. Gingrich probably thinks he can win.

7. He's got a huge hidden constituency among school "reformers".
Lots of $$$ to be made off of peoples' ignorance of (OK, OK, *distance from*) public school systems and schools.

Maybe even some folks here.

But to answer your question: only if he loses.

8. More Clowns At The Circus...
...or a race to the bottom. The Gnewster has more dirty laundry than the Dugger's dumper...but he knows that there's money in them thar primaries. He's still a fave among the "think tanks" and its billionaire owners (DeVos, Koch, Mellon-Scaiffe) and he's more than happy to carry their water for a nice "contribution" to his PACs and campaign. For their "investment", Gnewtie gets to jet around the country, pretend to be relevant and ask for more donations. He'll get plenty of face time on the plethora of debates we'll soon have to endure that will then raise his value on the rubber chicken circuit. Right now he's lucky to bring down $5gs...but as a failed candidate, he could ask for 20gs. Then he'll write a book about his "views" and one later about his campaign. Then there's all the merchandising...

The fun here is how lame and flawed all these candidates are...which is sure to make the GOTB primaries like watching a demolition derby...or maybe a bad car wreck. One can't help but rubber-neck...

11. enough primary support will give him some say in policy at convention
also, there is likely to be a huge focus on Trump, Newt, and Palin for the next 10-12 months even if they don't run. Another candidate will look pretty sane by comparison. The other candidate can win a few of the more middle/neutral states on their own by looking sane and win conservative states with the endorsement of Newt or Palin (endorsements traded for influence in the administration)

12. Nertz to Newt!
On the almost inconceivable chance that he got the GOP nomination, I will have that on a bumper sticker on my cars.

13. Well, the Republicans would do us a favor by nominating him!
But they're not that stupid. How in the world does this has-been who is one of the most unpopular public figures over the past 50 years think he's going to get elected president?

...and blows up in his face.

Let's not let him do it with the whole country, eh?

15. Here's how it works..... Christine O'Donnell figured this out...

You can't "keep" the campaign funds, but you CAN roll them over into your Political Action Committee.

Then, you have your PAC hire you as a consultant. Every now and then you make a contribution to some other campaign and the rest is your salary.

17. What a scam.
And what a scam artist.

When you stop and think about it, it's a wonderful way to pass on a kick back for something you might do for someone in the private sector.

20. On par with starting your own religion, really
Edited on Tue May-10-11 12:39 PM by jberryhill
All you have to do is start "Americans against bad things", solicit donations from shut-ins and whomever responds to your brand of crazy, pay $1 to "fight bad things" and you take the rest through:

1. Your "technical services" company;

2. Your "advertising agency"; and

3. Your own salary as consultant.

Appoint your buddies as board members and pay them a regular flat meeting fee for rubber stamping whatever you want to do.

Newt rakes in millions this way.

Christine walked away with at least a cool 2 million. At least. And that's from having no job since 2002, never winning an office, and really not doing anything productive for anyone in nearly a decade. It was an extension of her "Morons for Jesus" thing. Call yourself an "activist", attract attention, get donations, lather, rinse, repeat. Her PAC pretty much just (a) pays her and (b) gave a few bucks to a local mayoral race of no great consequence.

You can then cross-promote with other people running the same type of operation.

Non-profits are a GREAT way to make a LOT of money. What "non-profit" means is that you have to spend all of your money on, you know, "expenses". You shuffle that money through your own "contractors", and life is good.

19. He looks like the kind of guy that generally wins GOP nomination
if you skip Bush the sucky, in general over the past 60 years the GOP nomination has been an older white guy that spent a long time paying his dues to the party. Newt has that McCain feel as a guy that's been around the party forever and now it's his turn to "get" the nomination. He also doesn't carry the stink most candidates have. He can run on him balancing the budget, and opposing war while leader of the house. I don't think his personal life will affect him if jobs, jobs , jobs and the debt are primary reason primary voters turn out.
