Racist Idiot of the Day
Racist Idiot of the Day
by Abby Zimet

Some guy in upstate New York who lives next door to a new mosque put up this sign. The First Amendment strikes again. He says he doesn't like their lights. Uh, ok. Should we take it as progress he doesn't feel he can say out straight he doesn't like them?

1. The mosque should put up a sign:
"If you're looking for a racist asshole, he lives on the other side of the driveway."

Just because the place next door is a Mosque, that doesn't mean the statement "Bomb making next door" is racist.

Some Muslims HAVE made...and used...bombs.

Just like some white guys have made...and used...bombs.

Timothy McVeigh

The Unabomber

It isn't so much "racist" as it is ignorant and mean spirited and likely very very wrong since I doubt the Mosque next door has a bomb making factory in the basement.

9. Yeah, wow
Do you deny that any Muslims have ever made and used bombs?

Is that not true?

Even if they never did, that doesn't make the statement racist. It only makes it false.

What if the building next door were a Synagogue instead of a Mosque?

Or a Black Baptist church?

A Hindu temple?

A Catholic church?

A Quaker Meeting House?

10. If the building next door was a a Black Baptist church and the sign read something
stereotypically incorrect about African Americans it sure would be.

But it's not. It's Muslim and makes bigoted assumptions about all Muslims. It is bigoted and/or racist.

17. Racism and bigotry
So...bigotry is:

–noun, plural -ries.
1.
stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one's own.

Does this apply to the man who made that sign?

Does he have total intolerance of creed or belief, or does he have a mistaken belief about what activities Muslims do?

What really strikes me as ironic is that many of the same people throwing the word "bigot" around here at DU are, according to the definition of the word, bigots themselves.

Completely intolerant of creeds, beliefs, and opinions that differ from their own.

People don't just disagree with some beliefs here. They are completely intolerant of them, going so far as to insult people who have them...even DU members.

It's my belief that this is not a "racist" sign because it doesn't refer to the people in the Mosque as being inferior or subhuman. It only says...falsely, I think...that the Mosque is a bomb making factory.

6. OK... and why do you think this asshole is saying bomb makers live there?
Because they are brown/Muslim. It's bigoted and/or racist.

11. He's saying it because
The Government has SCARED Americans into believing that brown/Muslim people are out to get us "for our freedoms".

People were scared into believing that shit for eight long years.

We never heard about white guys with bombs on airplanes.

No. We always heard about MUSLIM guys on airplanes.

Any reasonable person knows it's not just Muslim guys who make and use bombs.

Maybe this guy has some sort of mental problem. Maybe he's paranoid. That doesn't mean he's "racist". He's had fear drilled into him since 2001. What does anyone here expect, for crissakes?

20. Fear isn't necessarily racism
Racism is the belief that one's own race is inherently SUPERIOR to another race. Or all other races.

I don't see any evidence in that sign which points to the man who made it believing that his race is superior.

He's only stating an opinion based on what he's been subjected to for ten years.

People see things out of the context of the entire person, and think they have the right to pronounce that person a sexist or racist or bigot or whatever other label they want to pin on him.

That's really no better than this guy thinking that all Muslims are mad bombers.

22. No.
he didn't put that sign there because of bigotry, which is intolerance of someone else's belief.

He put it there because we have all been bombarded almost daily for ten years with news and images and what have you concerning Muslims and bombs.

If no Muslim person EVER used a bomb and the guy put a sign next to that Mosque, then yeah...I'd have to wonder what's up.

Maybe the worst he's doing is stereotyping, but that's not the same as being "racist".

28. OK, I'll go with that...
and if he's got a phobia of Islamists, that doesn't mean he's an asshole any more than someone is who has a fear of birds or the number 13 or thunderstorms, etc.

I have an irrational fear of blood...open spaces...taking medication, etc.

I don't want to be afraid of these things, and I don't know why I am, but I am.

I think this man would probably prefer not to be afraid of Muslims. Being afraid is a terrible way to live. :(

And I think it does make him an asshole. If it were an innocent fear of, he would hide in his closet not put a sign up to proclaim his hate. Your argument is silly.

You can never call someone in America a pedophile without proof. You can verbally attack a group (church or mosque), but not an individual without proof.

because with around 1 billion muslims in the world, it is unlikely I would be hard pressed to find a muslim of any race you chose.

Perhaps just idiot of the day would be a better thread title.

there is a strong correlation, between our distaste for arabs and distaste for muslims.
