Kansas Arts Commission is closing (Gov. Brownback has laid off all of its employees)
Updated: 5/11 10:42 pm

TOPEKA, Kansas -- Gov. Sam Brownback's administration has told the Kansas Arts Commission that its five employees will lose their jobs and the agency will be shut down next month.

Secretary of Administration Dennis Taylor sent a letter Tuesday telling the employees their jobs would end June 10. Brownback wants to eliminate the commission and replace it with a nonprofit foundation relying heavily on private donations to finance arts programs.

"Well, the impact on all arts in Kansas is going to be pretty enormous," says Michael Spicer of Salina's Community Theatre. "You're going to have a negative impact not only on local economies but on jobs. To me it's completely counter-intuitive on what the purpose of budget cutting is."

<snip>

Arts Commission Chairman Henry Schwaller says the agency was shocked by the move and claims it is a back-door attempt to circumvent what Kansas residents want.

The five employees of the Kansas Arts Commission will be out of work with the closing of the office on June 10th.

12. Crop art? What a waste of taxpayer dollars! And potentially productive farmland.

What's that? Let it lie fallow? What sort of enviro-nut are you? That could be a meat-packing plant right there!

5. gov Brownstain will be satisfied when all of Kansas public employees are laid off
Public schools took a MAJOR hit. 268 teachers just in Wichita public schools alone will be let go

7. Controlled art only. Can't have any of that high minded librul minded art
floating around the bible thumping right wing middle amurkans. Gotta keep em votin against their interests, no matter what. Won't have that commie worker murals in Kansas, by Gawd.

Last week, the gov signed a law that expanded the no-wind-turbine area of the flint hills, all in the name of the environment, don't ya know.

Can't wait for more ALEC agenda.

/sarcasm off.

You know, Kansas was part of the original Peoples Party. It used to be progressive. It could happen again. What's good for Wisconsin was good in Kansas once before.

10. When I lived in the US, I had a nine-hour drive -- much of it across Kansas -- to get home
to visit my family in Oklahoma. I came to love Kansas due to that long, quiet drive. Kansans deserve better than what Gov. Brownback is shoving down their throats.

11. When Republicans talk about "jobs" it isn't to create them but to get rid of them.
And they are doing very well at it..Normally I consider Republicans to be very much incompetent, but when it comes to sending money up the ladder and destroying jobs, they excel.
