The rapture nuts are out en masse today.
Edited on Thu May-12-11 01:55 PM by Renew Deal
I was walking up 6th Ave (2 Blocks from Fox) in NYC today and saw several rapture nuts handing stuff out. I decided to talk to a couple of them. The first one I saw was a woman.

Me: What happens if we're still here on the 22nd.
Her: We won't be. Everyone is going.
Me: In that case, can I have your stuff?
Her: You won't be here either.
Me: That's fine. Then can I have your address so I can pick it up?
Her: You'll be able to have everyones stuff.
Me: But I want your stuff. Can I have your address?
Her: My kids are there.
Me: But your kids won't be there.
Her: (trying to go back to how we'll all be gone)

Then I started talking to another one.

Me: Will you guys kill yourselves before the big day?
Him: No, we are not a cult.
Me: Good. I'm glad you'll be here to know you're wrong. What does it mean if you're still here?
Him: That will mean I wasn't saved (or something like that).
Me: So what's going to happen?
Him: The rapture will come.
Me: Yes, so what does that mean? Will people just die? Will they fly into the sky?
Him: They will be raised to heaven (IIRC).
Me: So what happens if you're still here?
Him: I will be here for the second world.
Me: How will we know that people have gone? Will they disappear?
Him: Some people will still be here. In fact, a lot. But some people WILL BE GONE.
Me: So not everyone is going? (The other woman told me we were.)
Him: Some will (basically be) not saved and if I'm here I didn't deserve to go.

This is where it goes from funny to sad.

Me: Do you have a job?
Him: No, I gave it up.
Me: Why would you do that? Can't you have faith and protect yourself?
Him: The end is near, blah, blah.

This guy was a true believer. I think these people have hardened their views since the last time I encountered them. I encountered one in December that one basically said that if May 21 doesn't happen, no big deal.

I saw a third one and asked him "whether clothes would be left behind when the rapture comes." He said yes. I said awesome!

A little later I saw 6 rapture short buses going up 6th ave. Many of these people have bought into this crap. They couldn't wait for 2012, so they moved it up to 2011. I hope they'll be able to handle it when they make it through the day and nothing happens.

54. Jehovah Witnesses I know do this every so often. They have a
date so they run up bills out the yazoo and then what? It didn't happen? I'm having a party at my house 12-22-12. You are all invited.

They want to save you. The front of the flyer said "The end of the world is almost here." The back says "I hope God will save me. We are almost there."

...they're just handing out brochures; no asking for money (course, it's a little late to replow the contributions into new billboards at this point.

6. I wouldn't be surprised if some don't send themselves on the 'rapture'
after they aren't 'called up' on the 21st. I expect that, or some to go ballistic in some public situations, planning to take heathens with them that kept them from being raptured.

Total nutcases - and not even Bible-thumping nutcases at that. If they actually read their Bibles, they'd know better.

It begins at 6 PM in the Pacific Rim with an earthquake (which seems more like Michael Stipe prophesising than anything else), and goes around the world by time zones. So if you live on the West Coast, you have plenty of warning; Vanuatu, not so much.

10. Had The Same Encounter in Baltimore
They recently put up one of their big billboards downtown as well. Saw a few near the inner harbor a few weekends ago and asked the same question about whether I could have their stuff.

Felt like I *almost* had one old lady convinced to just hand me her purse. I wouldn't have taken it, but I was pretty sure if I had kept pressing her she would have given it to me. They really are true believers. They are going to be real, real sad come May 22nd.

24. I listen to their radio station here in Baltimore sometimes
For shits-n-gigs. They really are of the true believer variety. While the radio station(s) is listen funded, they don't seem to be asking for money (granted, I only listen in very small doses). I haven't heard them openly telling people to sell off their stuff or give money to any one particular person.

The funniest part is, the guy behind all this, Harold Camping, has already been wrong once on this topic, having prediced the end of days back in the 90s.

Anyway, I'd seen the billboards, even here in the liberal god-hating SF Bay Area, but I didn't think they were talking about a literal end of the world and the rapture and all that. Who does that anymore? I just thought it was symbolic or metaphorical. Kinda like after the Jehovah's Witnesses predicted the return of Jesus for the umpteenth time but when the date came and went they claimed Jesus returned invisibly.

If you can get them to sign over or give you their stuff now, since they won't be needing it in a few days, then you probably can get your hands on their stuff.

Anything they have on them - wristwatches, cash, jewelry.

See if you can get them to bring stuff to you, if they are showing up in the same place.

Ask them if they want a receipt.

Take everything you can get.

Heck, I think I'll roam around this weekend looking for some of them. Does anyone know if they gather in any particular spots in the Philadelphia area?

I will be more than happy to get everything I possibly can from them. They earned it.

perhaps even muslims, or hippies...basically any group of people that the rapturists aren't likely to see (or identify) regularly. It would be so much fun to see their faces if every TV station announced that witches around the world were suddenly missing or that the middle east was mostly uninhabited except for the Jewish people.

Actually, messing with these people isn't wise or worth it. They aren't the smartest or most stable lot.

51. National Geographic does one of their special reports fairly often
on a cult in northeastern NM that is especially illuminating. The leader, "Michael," AKA god, announced that the end was going to be on a specific date and on that date he would metamophose into a higher being. The cult could talk of nothing else for weeks, they were all like 8 year olds just before Xmas.

When the day came and went and nothing happened, it was like it had never been predicted. If asked about it, cult members would just change the subject. If the interviewer persisted, the cult members would walk away. They never lost faith in their leader.

NM is notoriously hard on gods walking the earth and "Michael" is now serving a long stretch in prison for molesting some of the underage girls in the cult. His sheep eagerly await his return.

Whackjobs seem to have been breeding in droves lately, and spreading it around to people of all faiths and nationalities. Every time you turn around there's a fundie of one religion or the other trying to convince you that the world would be a better place if you would just randomly get rid of everyone that isn't just like the fundie nutjob who is selling their highly poisonous snake oil. It amazes me that people still fall for the bullshit.
