REPORT: Sen. Tom Coburn Actively Negotiated Multi-Million Dollar Hush Money Package For Ensign’s Mistress

After a 22-month investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee released a report on the conduct of Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), who resigned early this month. The report contains voluminous evidence suggesting Ensign may have violated several laws in an effort to cover up an affair with a member of his staff. The committee has referred the matter to the Department of Justice.

Contained in the 67-page report, however, is troubling evidence of the central role that current Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) played in trying to keep Ensign’s mistress and her husband quiet — evidence that contradicts Coburn’s previous public statements on the matter.

Coburn eventually agreed to cooperate with the Ethics Committee; their findings on the level of his involvement are startling. According to the committees report, Coburn actively assisted in the discussions of a hush money package, negotiating a proposed package from $8 million down to $2.8 million. The ethics committee report, on pages 37 to 38, describes the negotiation between Mr. Albregts, an attorney for the husband of Ensign’s mistress, and Sen. Coburn:

One thing is certain: Tom Coburn has a lot of explaining to do.

1. Not really. As always it will come down to IOKIYAR. Ensign will get
tapped on the wrist, and Coburn's criminalty will be brushed aside as insignificant.

2. I'm sure the OK republicans will send him packing
back to DC next election.

Corruption is ONLY significant if a Democrat is involved.

4. I believe if we had any courage in Washington--they could apply RICO
because racketeering should apply here:

"Traditionally, the word racket is used to describe a business (or syndicate) that is based on the example of the protection racket and indicates a belief that it is engaged in the sale of a solution to a problem that the institution itself creates or perpetuates, with the specific intent to engender continual patronage."

5. The question is where in the hell was Coburn going to get this money?
Was it to be corporately funded? Was Tom gonna fork over the dough from his bank account?

With each passing year, the GOP in Congress resemble La Cosa Nostra more and more.

8. The $90-something check came from Ensign's father's family trust fund.
It was presented as "severance pay" to the Hamptons (both had worked for Ensign's senate office); however, the amount of the check was $20k more than the couple's combined yearly salaries & the money didn't come from Ensign's senate office budget.

6. Coburn is a lying, cheating, slandering piece of shit
Edited on Thu May-12-11 06:29 PM by Bluenorthwest
This is another leader of the 'faith community' even Obama has touted the Grand Morality of his good friend and fellow Defender of Marriage Tom Coburn. This piece of toxic waste ran a homophobic campaign of deceit to obtain the office he now abuses. He is a liar, party to fraud and basically a pimp, and this fucker sermonizes against gay people. He and his kind should feel the full impact of the law on them. And public shame. Hypocrites and vermin.

14. Ensign is a home-wrecker, like Henry Hyde before him.
Chasing and harassing a married woman until she gives him.

The woman was driven nuts.

17. "Tom Coburn has a lot of explaining to do."
He sure does. Coburn should be forced to resign. This is criminal and also a clear violation of his oath of office.

Will we ever hear a peep of this in the M$M outside Rachel Maddow?

23. "Cooperating Witness"...
...translation: throwing your old pal under the bus. Coburn isn't the target here, Ensign is, but I sure do hope that when indictments are handed down his name appears on the list (unless he invokes some form of immunity).

When I saw the term "cooperating witness" it sure sounded like "immunity from prosecution" to me. Typical horsetrading and I expect the vainglorious Senate was reluctant to go after Ensign and is far more loathe to go after Coburn...especially cause he's got buddies on the other side of the aisle (and the White House).

Looks like he's already been given his "get out of jail free" card...
