GM is hiring people across the country. Should we keep a list of the corporations who
actually hire people during these times?

*Edit*

Something else I found. The U.A.W. made a provision in 2007 that allows the "Big 3" to hire new workers at $14 per hour, half the $28 being paid to older employees.

4. That isn't what new hires get....
An unskilled production worker starts around $14 or $15. Better than minimum wages, and there is a top out in 5 years.

10. so i'd say a large percentage of americans make less than that
to ignore that is to ignore them.

And this isn't the first time (or the second) you've demeaned me for how much money I make, very "progressive" to use your term.

what mendacious crap.

just about as mendacious as going around saying "well, $14/hour is better than minimum wage, lots of people would be happy to get that" after the ruling class just cut auto wages in half.

some people will be saying "well, they only want to cut off my left arm, that's better than my right one, i'll still be able to dig for grubs" as their "leaders" being chopping them to bits.

12. It was a lot like this thread
I like the edit. Adding mendacious to call me a liar makes it a much better post. The previous time was a thread a lot like this where I said maybe I'd picked the wrong field because they were making 14 or 15 an hour and you said that I had implying that anyone who makes less than that does because they chose to.

17. yes, in some locales $3/day = "a living wage". in some locales room + board = "a living wage".
in some locales gruel = "a living wage". gosh, it keeps you alive. what more do workers expect for chrissake!

$14/hr = half what the same workers would have gotten only a few short years ago, before obama helped the automakers fuck their workers.

labor cost now about 6% of the cost of a new car. billions in profits. gm for all its poormouthing has consistently been #1 or 2 in global sales for decades (this year expected to be #1), & invested billions in new plant in china while it was pleading it just couldn't afford to pay its us workers, & is wrapped up the ying-yang in joint ventures, tech trades & other incestuous dealing with every other auto corp on the planet.

who is the fucking "competition"?

there is none. it's a bullshit storyline the capitalists tell to the workers to justify the slow grinding down.

some people will cheer on their own destruction every step of the way.

5. Yes. I would like to know. Then if I actually have the choice to buy
one of their products or use their services, I can choose them. Thanks. Maybe DU should start a little item on the front page about American companies that are doing the right thing for their employees and the nation.

Let's don't just approach things from the negative. Let's look for some good companies that are responsible and let them know we appreciate it.

As my mother used to say when I was a child starting my babysitting career (she was a student of child development), "There is positive enforcement and negative enforcement, and positive enforcement works best."

Some of the best advice I ever got. We should use it on these companies. Positive reinforcement.
