A 3 mile line of cars to buy Burgers?! USA! USA!
What is wrong with this picture?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/12/in-n-out-burger-north-texas-expansion_n_861172.html

"I went to the Frisco at midnight last night hoping to bypass the crazy lunch hour line I'd seen on YouTube," James Sullivan, a North Texas resident, told HuffPost. He waited a while before an In-N-Out employee approached his car and told him they'd unfortunately have to send him home. "She said there was a three-hour wait."

Nick Rallo, the web editor for the Dallas Observer, furthered news of the commotion in his area. "If you were to draw a Venn Diagram yesterday, one circle would be In-N-Out Burger, the other would be thunderstorms, and the middle would be everybody," he said. "You would think the pope was here."

Texans Run Out of Gas at In-N-Out Burger Frisco
Opening Day Brings Long Lines, Empty Fuel Tanks

http://www.the33tv.com/news/kdaf-innout-craziness-frisco-running-out-gas-story,0,2359870.story

They waited outdoors in the pouring rain and in cars that snaked around the building. The average wait time: three hours. Long enough for some to run out of gas.

"Well, we got here with about 25 miles left in my tank. We thought we had plenty of time, but three hours later, we stalled," said DBU student Abigail Clements.

Abigail Clements and her friends had their car pushed to the side by some In-N-Out Burger employees, as they waited for a gas delivery.

Her friends say it was time well spent; A story they'll tell for years to come.

"I didn't really have any other plans today. So we just kind of sat here and listened to music, talked," said DBU student Jordan Redfrain.

" I'll tell my grandkids, yeah, I was in that line and we waited for four hours. We ran out of gas. I was at the first In-N-Out in Texas," said DBU student Kyle Uber.

1. Virtually everyone I know
raves about In-and-Out hamburgers. Though I rarely eat fast food I finally went and ordered a burger from there. Big whoop. Slightly spruced up version of a Micky D's. I didn't get it. AND I happened to notice the nice little bible verse on the bottom of the cup. :wtf:

14. Same thing when Five Guys opened in my area...
OK, nice burger (and a little drippy for my taste), but nothing I'd feel compelled to rave about, but three different people obviously had different opinions and enthused about it.

No bible verses, though, thankfully. It's just a marketing gimmick for people who fell more comfortable when surrounded by a constant stream of pieties. Doesn't matter if they're empty pieties, just so long as they're there.

50. In-n-Out is ho hum, IMHO. I went to one in Phoenix couple years back, and was not impressed.
Five Guys, OTOH, is just about the best, most filling burger one can buy in terms of fast food.

That said, I wouldn't wait in a line for any fast food for more than 20 minutes, let alone for three hours.

132. I agree waiting 3 hours for a burger is ridiculous
but makes more sense then waiting 3 hours for concert tickets, a new book to go on sale,
a movie premier or any other reason people wait in line.

24. the fries are cut from potatoes on site, never frozen
same for the hamburger, ground in the store. Milkshakes made from ice cream. Fresh, simple, classic.

Too bad other chains don't do some of this. Fresh food is better.

125. Gah!
Blasphemy!

In 'n Out doesn't even INSTALL heat lamps, they grind their own beef fresh, fries are sliced from real potatoes seconds before going into the 100% natural vegetable oil fryer, super high uality veggies that actually LOOK like they do in the TV commercials (and taste as good as they look), and their SHAKES are made from real ice cream...not powder dumped into an icy slush like most other places.

If that's not good enough, there's always the Secret Menu. Animal style fries...mmmmmmmmmmm :9

2. We had this happen in Michigan when Sonic opened here...
My kids BEGGED me to take them the week they opened...

I drove to the site, and the line was outrageous, when
a kid with a flashlight directed me to the "staging area"
(to get a hamburger?!?) I told my kids to FORGET IT.

I tried.

People sleep on the sidewalk for days waiting to get into a movie, or buy a book, or a phone, or an ipad. The list of things like this goes on and on.

People have different opinions on what is important to them. So just what IS normal? (thats a rhetorical question, but you can answer if you want)

J/K... I'm sure there's not really anything all that special. It's like Coors beer -- when we couldn't get it here on the east coast, it was all the rage to have a couple of cans in the fridge. Now that we can get it, it's not that big a deal. (Not all that great, either.)

I grew up in Cocoal Beach, Florida, my step-father was the head of the Delta Missle program at Cape Canaveral. They had a lot of rocket parts shipped out from Houston, and it wall always hush-hush when it happened...because his team in TX would pack cases and cases of Coors in with the rocket parts, which were often shipped in climate-controlled containers. The folks would have parties at the house and having Coors was like the big special treat that only a few people were made privy to. "Pssst....look what I got!"
LOL! Today, I think I'd sooner drink the rocket fuel than Coors.

But I'd have to go WAY out of my way to do that, and I'm just not nasty enough to feel an overwhelming urge to go that far out of my way for a dumb prank.

I imagine many people believe they have absolute knowledge of why another individual may or may not purchase a burger based on little more than a hunch. In my church, it's called a Dogmatic Faith.

But I'm fully confident you're the exception to the rule...

109. And miles are mentioned, by the way:
In the Huffington Post article:

Many customers camped overnight in the parking lot on Tuesday, hoping to be the first to taste the legendary burger, while others waited for hours in the lengthy drive-thru line, which stretched over two miles during the lunchtime rush on Wednesday.

Dunno, maybe those burgers affected your eyesight. You say you didn't notice the bible references either? :D

143. Perhaps, many question my sanity, I do not worry about it
I drink a lot and have developed a vile temper the last few years.

You ate the same shit every day for four years and never noticed the packaging? You should pay more attention to what you eat. As best I recall (it has been almost a decade since I've been to CA) the burgers come in a little paper ... sack, I guess you might call it. I seem to remember it being red and white... or was it red and yellow... I'm not positive. No pictures on it of christ or a Cross that I remember but always a nice little bible reference. Like chick-fil-a (which IMHO is a much better place) it tends to attract the fundies as loyal customers.

The article as well as the title of the OP do in fact mention miles.

Now, if you want real fresh and all local, you should try Kwepies (where Dave Thomas got his start) but... Then you would have to go to Lima, OH.

Too bad they are only in Barbados.

McDonalds tried to get established in Barbados. They failed.
Chefette is the reason why. Much better than McD's or In&Out or any of the other chains we have.

They've got good burgers, but it's really about the rotis. Curried wonderful in a wrap.

Amazing...we were having a cocktail on the beach at a British ex-Pat bar on Koh Tao (no Americans on the islands...only ran into two Americans in two weeks). The Brit bartender had just returned with is lunch, some awesome-looking spicy noodle soup...and a back of McDonald's french fries. Using chopsticks, he'd dunk a big portion of the fries into the noodle soup. Probably assuming that everyone at the bar was also a Brit or other European tourist (or knowing that there was a Yank at his bar), he loudly proclaimed "The only good thing the Americans ever did was bring McDonald's to Thailand!" Wow...that's the good thing? The rest of the world really does hate us!

They were just as I remembered them...kinda slimy, too much mustard, steamed...AWESOME! Made me feel like I had just left a bar at 2 in the morning! But the awesomeness was more about the memories and the uniqueness, not about the "quality" of the food.

122. What is a worthwhile way to spend ones time is not an objective measurement
it's up to that individual.

Is spending time waiting in line with your friends for a few hours so you can be present on the opening day for something worthwhile?

Maybe, maybe not.

But what about the thousands of people in the area who didn't go, but instead sat at home and watched TV for that same period of time? Was that a good way to spend their time?

It's not like it was a choice between doing this or learning astro-physics or feeding starving children.

Chances are they would have spent the time (or wasted it, if you prefer) doing something else that someone, somewhere would have deemed pointless.

Maybe they could have gone to see the nth fast and furious movie.

Well, to be honest I did pretty much the same thing in the spring of '77 when I was eleven and Star Wars opened. Probably spent the better part of most Saturdays for a two months standing in line waiting to see it (again and again and again...).

So I can't really get worked up about some benign burger patrons. (and in the interest of full disclosure, I'm waiting about another week before I go to the Frisco In-N-Out franchise as I've never had one and have do love to try new burgers...)

100. Actually, I didn't denigrate anyone.
I expressed amazement, and perhaps I'm a bit baffled about what could cause an adult to burst into uncontrollable sobbing because of her hamburger, but as you stated, I admit to paying to watch Star Wars seven times in one week. I also have seen Apocalypse Now more times than I can count, and have every version of it from useless VHS to DVD of "...Redux." No Blu-Ray yet, but that's coming.

Anyway, I can actually rationalize the difference; In And Out is not "new." They've been around, they'll be there tomorrow, they'll be there next week when the lines are shorter. As so many here have pointed out, most of these sobbing In And Out Worshippers are transplants from CA who fondly remember their favorite burger. In contrast, Star Wars was totally new. Nothing like it had been seen on film at the time. Cover stories on every major magazine, a theatrical experience unlike anything anyone had seen at that time. I didn't sob and wait in line for days when Star Wars was released on VHS or DVD, the way people are about burgers they already are familiar with. There is just something very bizarre about this behavior, imho. Sure, you may think watching a movie seven times in a week is bizarre...but I never camped out for it, never waited in three hour lines for it, and I certainly never broke into hysterical crying fits over it.

I'll agree that the people who waited in line are likely CA transplants, and if not that, people who have been to CA and had the burgers.

For some reason, the Star Wars craze didn't affect me, even though I was 16 when it came out. Maybe because it came out two weeks after I got my first car, and a week after that I found out what marijuana was, who's to say?

I too have seen every version of AN and can repeat almost the whole script verbatim when it's on.

^5 to you Atman.

81. 1. The article says nothing about a 3 mile line. 2. Anyone who's been to In-&-Out understands this.
Freshness you can WATCH.

They used to be tiny little places with two drive-thru lanes and a small building in the middle where they made your burgers. Fantastic place IMO.

84. That article may not say "3 miles," but other reports, and video, do say that.
Video on NBC showed a car driving down the road next to the waiting line...an endless line of cars. It was reported to be three miles long.

Stupidity you can watch.

But if I am every near one, you can be sure I will roll on in for an Animal Style Double-Double (no tomatoes) and an Animal fries.

For those wondering about the people practically crying because they could eat from there - I sympathize. After Katrina, we didn't have a Taco Bell for 8 months because they were all destroyed. When it finally reopened, it was greeted with the same enthusiasm as eating from a 5-star restaurant.

I think we ate from Taco Bell every other day for about 2 weeks just in sheer happiness that it was there again!

I don't eat fast food anymore and I have issues with the way it is produced and marketed. But I don't have issues with people who choose to consume it. You think William Kristol eats In and Out Burgers? The Koch Brothers? William F. Buckley? Conservatives are the REAL elitists.

That whole "intellectual elitism" shit is just a bunch of bullshit some right-wing think tank dreamed up to siphon Southern and rural voters away from the Democratic Party that was trying to help them, and whom those same voters once supported consistently. By accusing us of that elitism, you're buying into their narrative.

You seriously don't think that's intellectual elitism? It would be a lot easier to beat the right-wing meme to death if so damn many progressive purists didn't feel the constant need to remind "Southern and rural voters" how much better they are, all the time. Seriously, who CARES that some people waited in line for a burger? That makes them stupid sheep to be mocked? Really?

He didn't accuse "us" of elitism. Most liberals I know couldn't give a hoot less about judging other people for cultural or lifestyle choices like watching NASCAR or eating fast food burgers. But there's obviously a minority crowd who can't resist pointing out how intellectually inferior the vast unwashed masses of America are, and they are the ones making "us" look bad and validating the stupid RW narrative. I'm all in favor of liberals calling out the purer-than-thou crowd on their crap, because they DON'T speak for "us."

190. It's not about 'the burger crowd'; it's about people queuing for 3 hours for 'fast food'
No, I don't think it's 'intellectual elitism' to say it's stupid to queue for 3 hours for a slightly better burger than you had somewhere else, and that will be served for the indefinite future at the same place. I eat burgers, but I'd never queue for 3 hours for one unless it was the only food available within 3 hours travelling.

Let's be clear: 'the masses' do not queue 3 hours for burgers. That is unusual behaviour. That's why this is a news story. It's not 'intellectual' to suggest people have better things to do with their life than queue 3 hours for lunch.

Edited on Fri May-13-11 11:19 AM by rainbow4321
I live down the highway from there...the Dallas Morning News wrote how one guy was there since MONDAY outside the place, another lady was crying as she ate her burger, others waited for 14 hours..it went on and on.
Given these people's reaction and wait time, you would think we are down here living in the middle of a third world country famine.
After reading the nonsense, I strolled on down the sidewalk to my local pub and ordered a veggie burger/fries and a slice of cheesecake. Time spent from order to last bite = 45 minutes.

The local hype and reaction to "new/first locations here" is not new to us. Back when the first Krispy Kreme opened here people did the same thing. Local media and mom/pop donut places were in horror, we spent weeks reading how all the locally owned shops were going to go out of business since EVERY person wanting a donut would shun mom/pops and go to Krispy Kreme.

Lo and behold, locally owned shops are still thriving and I think the last time I drove by the location where KK was, it was an abandoned building.

While I admire and occasionally partake of In-N-Out's freshness, a three hour wait is a bit long even at lunch hour at the In-N-Out.
But a three hour wait so one can say they were at the "event", I can see folks doing that.

community. There wasn't a three mile line because we don't have the population, but there was a long, long line there every day for more than a month. However, the staff got through the line quickly and dished up the burgers almost as fast. The lines have shortened but the place is still busy all the time.

Incidentally, they are the only fast food burgers that I will eat. Also, they pay $10 and hour starting wages. When they opened they had something like 2,000 job applications. Goes to show how much unemployment there is.

Well, not a 3 mile long line. That would've been everyone in the town and surrounding area. I went a few weeks later expecting some miraculous burger sent directly from heaven. It sucked. Yes, I am a cheeseburger snob and freely admit it. In-and-Out really just blows.

Besides the sucknessicity of the food, the people that worked there gave me the friggin CREEPS! They were the sons and daughters of the Stepford Wives. When they're brainwashing these kids to work at their church...er...burger joint, they should really remember to teach them to blink and that a friendly smile is just as effective in promoting good customer service as the vampiric, ear-to-ear, toothy grin that they all have plastered on their faces. Also, too, and...when I ask for no mustard or other crap, doing a backflip and giving me a hug frightens me. Okay. The last bit was an exaggeration, but not too far off.

Edited on Sat May-14-11 11:18 AM by rainbow4321
Allen and Frisco...
I live next door in Plano and there have been a number of businesses that have left here to go to those 2 cities, especially Allen. Even my 20 yr old daughter who grew up here in Plano and has lots of friends in Allen commented how many hang outs and businesses have shifted their locations north to Allen.
When the mega-mall Stonebriar first opened, it was was a city against city blood bath between Plano and Frisco over which side of the highway that the mall would be built on. The south side of 121 would of meant it went to Plano, north side meant Frisco. They both wanted the mall revenue really, really badly! Frisco won out in the end.

So it's not surprising that In-and-Out picked Frisco and Allen for their first local stores. Those cities are what Plano USED to be, say, 10 years ago, business-building wise.

I think it probably helped that (if I were to guess) this are probably has the most transplanted Californians because of all the high tech companies in Collin County. I'm sure In-and-Out did their consumer research before investing time and money here. Given the lines of people and cars, they picked the right area and it has payed off (for now, anyway).
