Killings Averaging 1 Daily in Dallas
DALLAS - At 2:00 in the afternoon on May 13, Dallas reported its 13 murder of the month.

A sudden five-percent spike in killings comes after years of declines. In fact, Dallas hit a 50-year low in 2010.

Detectives can't explain it, though some have suggested that the economy might be to blame.

However, one thing is clear: the homicide unit is scrambling to keep up with the unsolved cases.

3. Sounds like a gang war in action.
Gang violence, usually to control the drug trade, is the number one source of murder in the US. One more way in which the "war on drugs" creating a massive, incredibly profitable black market where anything goes is stupidest idea in a long line of stupid ideas. Case in point, after prohibition of alcohol was eliminated, you know what happened to the murder rate? It plummeted, despite all the predictions that we'd see the streets filled by alcohol-fueled carnage.

5. Except that people don't actually MAKE that argument, except as a strawman.
It's like the right-wing saying that liberals want people to be able to marry animals. It's utterly false.

9. What? So you've never seen a right winger make that argument?
I've seen them do it all the time. Right after the Giffords shooting in fact. They claimed if only people there had guns, it would have been stopped! I hear right wingers make that exact argument all the time so your premise that they never do is false.

6. For your consideration.
http://www.johnstonsarchive.net/policy/abortion/usa/ab-usa-TX.html

It is sixteen years since George W. Bush took office as Governor of Texas, and the abortion rate in that state fell in every year he was in office.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to run like hell!

I guess that's what the abortion issue does these days. I should add that the simplistic observation above is not my idea, but that of the dude who wrote Freakanomics. The worst parts of it are all mine.
