Gov. Christie Begging Obama for Federal $$$.
Edited on Sun May-15-11 06:57 AM by Smarmie Doofus
This must be a bit awkward. A Tea Party Icon whimpering for a chance to feed at the evil federal teat. And the FEDS have already determined that the situation DOES NOT QUALIFY.

Gov. Christie appeals FEMA rejection of flood aid

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reconsider his request for a major disaster declaration to help towns and residents affected by flooding in March.
FEMA rejected the request last month, saying the damage was not severe enough. It found that 80 percent of homeowners affected were covered by insurance and said those who weren't could work with local and state governments to get assistance.
But Christie announced Thursday that the state had filed an appeal.
Christie initially requested aid for Passaic, Bergen, Essex and Morris counties after rain-swollen rivers flooded streets and homes. In his appeal letter sent to President Barack Obama, the governor said he's also seeking aid for Warren County.

1. Fairness to the owners of those homes.
Totally flooded three times by rains and overflowing rivers since last spring. Their insurance carriers won't indemnify them indefinitely for a loss of everything, save for the foundations of the homes. Some had just moved back into their homes before the latest flood occurred.

Christie has an obligation to advocate for these losses and for federal help.

3. If any Federal money becomes available
it should be for purchase of those properties and moving the victims out of the flood plain. Three floods and you're out.

4. I'd go for that.
The Army Corp of Engineers has worked on rivers and tributaries in the region during the past decades, leaving some property owners dry while making owners downstream underwater.

5. I grew up in Wayne
There's been heavy flooding along the Passaic River in the Mountain View section of Wayne and nearby communities for decades. I remember bad floods back in the 60s, with people being rescuedfrom their flooded homes by boat crews.

Even back then, there was talk of federal buy-outs to relocate people out of the floodplain. There has been talk of buy-outs for decades.

Why hasn't something been done to move people out of the flood areas onto higher ground over the past 50 years? It's long past time to create a lasting, permanent solution rather than throwing money at people to fix up their homes, just to have them get flooded again and again.

6. Why building permits were issued for those locations is beyond me.
Muncipalities should be held accountable for allowing people to invest in properties that offered no security from flooding.
