12 Year Old Frightened Afghan Girl Mistakenly shot Dead by Nato
Afghan Girl Highlights Major Challenge for U.S. Military
Daphne Eviatar

Senior Associate, Human Rights First’s Law and Security Program
Twelve-year-old Nelofar was shot dead early Thursday morning outside her family's home in Eastern Afghanistan because NATO troops mistakenly believed that her uncle was a Taliban leader. She was running, apparently in fear of the military troops that had just invaded her father's house in the middle of a sweltering summer night.

NATO quickly apologized for its mistake. But it's just one of many such errors by U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan that have led to the deaths of civilians. As documented in a report released earlier this week, similar mistakes are also leading to the imprisonment of many innocent Afghans.

The tragedy on Thursday happened because NATO forces mistakenly believed that the young girl's uncle, a 25-year-old police officer with a wife and two daughters, was a Taliban leader. It's not clear on what they based their information.

It's exactly the sort of mistake I heard about over and over when I was in Afghanistan a few months ago, interviewing people who'd been imprisoned there by the U.S. military. As I describe in a report released by Human Rights First earlier this week, Afghans are sometimes imprisoned by the U.S. military for years based on false information provided to U.S. and NATO troops by secret informants. Often, those informants have a grudge against another villager or rival tribe member that has nothing to do with the Taliban or other insurgents. Yet the victim of the false tip never learns where it came from, so he doesn't have a fair chance to respond to it.

29. Some of us Democrats keep trying to tell our fellow Democrats that...but,
it seems, they just don't listen. They are too afraid of being seen as "not agressive enough on keeping America safe...so they follow the Repug Doctrine of Imperial America. Seems that way, anyway.

4. I saw SecDef Gates on 60 Minutes last night
He offered that he reads daily reports of every soldier killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. He said that he writes letters to the families of killed soldiers and that he wants every American to know that he cares for each and every soldier out there in the field. I wonder if SecDef Gates will write a letter to this girl's family or is it just her tough shit that she was killed.

We need to leave Afghanistan and Iraq yesterday. If only the oil and defense contractors would let us.

19. It seems to be "Tough Shit" if the kid was scared and ran out of the house...
"You Die, Kid!" And, the excuse will be that she "might have had a suicide vest" on her body that would have imploded and killed people. Yeah... It's sickening...

5. I wonder if....
they allowed everyone who didn't want to shoot 12-year old girls to just pack up and leave, how many soldiers they would have left.

Nah, I don't want to wonder. The throngs staying behind would confirm my suspicions about how the U.S. has become what we fought against in the past.

17. It's really sad...because Obama has two young daughters...and I can't believe
that this wouldn't affect him in some way. Isn't Malia going to be 12 years old?

It's really hard to deal with all of this continuing.

9. Nah, we reserve special treatment for the ones who make us wet ourselves
12-year-old girls, as scary as they are, don't make the cowards in power wet themselves. Her body just gets left in the dust. I am left to wonder, however, what "justice" might look like to the folks we're terrorizing and who have a great deal more justification for their fear than we do. We know what "justice" looks like to the "America, fuck yeah!" crowd.

And probably some friend or family member of hers is now going to be pissed off enough to take up arms against the US. Thus we continue to create our own enemies.

Just over 4 minutes & excellent. Unfortunately, you have to endure a 15 second commercial, prior to viewing.

"this is policy."

This is NOW AMERICAN POLICY under a Democratic President. This sets a bar that we thought Bush II (formrly know as "The Chimp") had over-topped.

I thought we elected a Democratic President who would never do this kind of thing? Why did I think that?

I listened to ALL of his Speeches on the MSM as he gave them. I wish I'd just READ THE TRANSCRIPT...so that I didn't get caught up in the emotion of the speech but really had read more closely the WORDS in his Speeches that would have shown me that he might do exactly what a Repug would do with OUR WARS....

It's really disappointing... what's happened. :-(

21. True...the news stories are of us restoring a few babies and young ones body parts we shot off
and it's cool for the doctors and gives them great publicity. After all a "few" do survive what goes on "over there" enough to get over here so that CNN can do a big Extravaganza with Dr. Gupta about how we've saved some children who would be disfunctional or unattractive because of their terrible wounds the rest of their lives.

It's great that Dr. Gupta and our amazing American Surgeons can give some hope to these kids...but WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF the "COLLATERAL DAMAGE?" What about THEM?

26. There's some show that folks talk about "24" about getting us used to torture...
Edited on Mon May-16-11 06:10 PM by KoKo
because the guy is cool and the plot is cool. I haven't seen it and don't want to trash it because I haven't seen it...but the reports around the web is that it's a "Hot Show" because it shows how torture is good because it can get information.

I don't know...but given how our Government (in the past) has done the Propaganda to support things (and I'm a close WWII BABY) who lived this stuff and the McCarthy Era...I can believe that Government Support would go to Media to Produce a Show about "Macho Folks" showing how brutality and torture and endless war are GOOD.. not bad.

It's the story of my life ...since "duck and cover" in grammar school because the RUSSIANS WERE GONNA KILL US KIDS!

When does this SHIT END?

Those silly ingrates don't realize that we're bringing them democracy and the good life.

And, tell them they're overdue on their candy and flowers contributions to the killers.
