We need to break up the monopolies.
What monopolies? You might ask?

For starters, we could begin with the big banks and the big oil companies. They have concentrated their wealth and power in very few hands in the last few years. The banks have become too big to fail. The oil companies have consolidated into about 5 large conglomerates that control the prices of oil and gas to the detriment of all the people.

For example, Exxon-Mobil became too big when they were permitted to become one company. They should be split up. The same goes for all the big oil companies. Instead of five big companies, they should be split into 15 or 20 companies. The same goes for the big banks. Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Bank of America, etc.

We need a trust buster at the head of this government. Those folks are screwing us big time and there is no one fighting for us, the people. We need to break up these monopolies.

1. We need Roosevelts, but we're stuck with Reagans.
Don't forget about the broadcast industries. We really should bust them all up. Too few companies own all the news sources.

4. I cannot disagree with that.
Some might argue that we need more competition with political parties, also? Certainly, we need to take the money out of politics if we are only going to have two parties...

5. there was a reason why AT&T was busted up in the past
And it needs to be done again, with them, Comcast as well -- and any other price-gouging monopoly that seeks to shut down competition.

6. We need a strong progressive message from the Democratic Party...
about these issues of monopoly. We need a progressive movement moreso right now than anytime in my lifetime and it is nowhere to be found??

8. we need a progressive president
We *have* a progressive wing that is being either ignored or snarked at. I personally don't see *anything* remotely progressive happening soon, even if we retain the WH.

Expecting monopoly breakups by the guy who surrounds himself with Goldman Sachs good ole boys?

We need a Huey Long to shame this administration into action.

11. The very first monopolies that need to be broken up are the media
monopolies. We need to be able to get real news and communicate. There also need to be laws about lying in the news.

The next monopolies that need to be broken are food and water. Bye Bye, Monsanto.

After that, we need to go after the banks and the war machine. That we have let monopolies get to this level is unconscionable and we are paying the price as a planet.

13. I think as a factor of being owned by monopolies few politicians want to
take on the republican message that breaking up monopolies, which they'd call big business not monopolies, is unamerican, socialism, hurts job creation. Republicans and some democrats will say it would hurt the economy while singing the praises of big business investing in america and that they further innovation with american competitiveness which democrats as a party won't fight.

Now is not the time to 'attack' big business, now isn't the time to end subsidies, now isn't the time for 'stifling' regulations...it is NEVER the time to do anything except what republicans want.

16. Aren't they more like cartels instead of monopolies?
Semantics always complicates communication.
