Republicans Behind Closed Doors...
Leader #1:

"This is an opportunity we cannot pass up. We have a chance to kill Medicare and to dismantle the social programs of FDR and the New Deal that were set up 80 years ago. We may not have this chance again."

Leader #2:

"But what about the debt limit? We could possibly throw the entire economy into a tail spin? Are we willing to chance that?"

Leader #3:

"If we can cut these social welfare programs, we are willing to gamble with the economy. We have the Democrats on the run. They are willing to compromise on everything. They would never let their beloved government default. We have them just where we want them."

Leader #1:

"And we will do the same thing when the taxcuts are due to expire. These guys are easy to roll..."

==============

In my opinion, this is what the Democrats are facing. These Republicans are as serious as a heart attack. They want to destroy the social safety net created by the New Deal. And they have their followers ripe for the picking. They will lie. They will cheat. They will do whatever is necessary to accomplish their goal of dismantling everything that helps the common folks of this country.

What can the Democrats do? Except to tell the people what is happening to them. They need to shout it from the rooftops. These radical Republicans are not out to simply screw Democrats - they are out to screw America. This is a call to arms. It is an emergency of utmost importance. We must inform the people what is happening.

On top of that, the Democrats need a plan. My suggestion would be that they take the Social Security funds out of the hands of the Republicans. It should not be in the general revenue budget. It should no longer be used as a slush fund for the right wing. Whatever is left over above payments to recipients should be used to pay down the national debt. This is on condition that Republicans pay for all their wars and special expenditures. If we have to call for a balanced budget, then so be it. They are thriving on deficits and deception. They must be held responsible for their spending. And they must either stop their spending or they need to raise revenues to pay for it. The taxes that working people pay are mostly targeted already. It is Republican spending that is tearing down our country.

The first step is to get Social Security out of the general revenue fund. Do not vote for any spending that is not paid for. Democrats need to get serious with these radicals.

1. I agree. As too calling their bluff - I think we have to. Their goal is to
end all parts of government except the police and military. For them an economic tailspin will just be another way to take over during a disaster to change policy and economics to their privatized model. Moving any parts that could in anyway earn money for their corporation into private hands.

We need to stay calm in the crisis and be prepared to fight back. You are also right that we need to move social security and other vital programs out of their hands so that they can be not only protected but prepared for more attacks on government by the rw. We need to prepare these programs in the same way that many of us here on DU are preparing our lives for survival.

4. We really need to cut up their credit card...
If we think about it, the massive debt that we have now was handed to Obama when Bush left office. Just as it was handed to Clinton when Bush Sr left office. We have to find a way to keep Republicans from spending on the credit card. They are killing us.

3. I think they are bluffing, personally
There is no way in hell they are going to default - but in the meantime, they and the Democrats have scored a big win for their banker buddies. Their Wall Street overlords can't sleep at night knowing there is a collection of dollars somewhere that they can't steal, so that's why they are digging into state pensions to keep government going for 10 weeks.

When they can't pay it back, and you know they won't be able to pay it back, they will be back to "well, Americans are just going to have to get by with less". This is also why a large percentage of them want to privatize Social Security - when the money is gone, and they can't pay it back, it's "oops, sorry."

10. you got that right. entirely
the last thing the bankers want is for the masses to have a retirement in their own homes. Jeeeez, that money belongs to the guys at chase, morgan stanley, the bohemian grove, not the unwashed bastards that do the toting.

I need to get outa here, not DU, but outa this country. The money grabbers just won't stop or give a man a moments peace.

9. Look what the tea baggers did...
in the last election. No sooner than they had all their fingers chopped off, they stuck their hands back on the same old block...
