Whatever happened to the "new" filibuster rule
that was supposed to take place in this session of Congress ?

Reporting from Washington— Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked a Democratic effort to scale back oil industry tax breaks, underscoring the difficulty of getting Congress to agree to any significant measures aimed at bringing down gas prices.

All but two Republicans — along with three Democrats — voted against bringing the repeal measure up for debate, even though the $2 billion a year in additional tax revenue from five major oil companies would have been steered into reducing the federal budget deficit, a Republican priority.

The 52-48 vote, short of the 60 needed to advance the measure, came as gas prices have moved center stage on Capitol Hill.

I thought we (Democrats) were going to put a stop to this kind of crap.

1. Its an excuse for doing NOTHING
No rules need to be changed, all the majority party has to do is bring up the legislation for a vote. If the minorty is willing, they can filibuster -ONLY THEN is it required that the majority invoke cloture, which requires 3/5ths super majority.

Just LET THE REPUGS FILIBUSTER!

How insanely simple is that concept? (not for YOU, jaysunb - my rage is 100% directd at the Senate).

They Repugs will either get tired and give up, or the voters will send the message to give up, or enough Senators will get edgy and THEN vote for cloture.

Its SO DAMN SIMPLE the only reason they won't force it is because they.don't.want.to.

2. The attempt to change the filibuster rule died a silent death on Capitol Hill
The Senate Democrats didn't want it, either. This way, those RepubliDems (the majority in the Senate) can shrug their shoulders with hands in the air, and hide behind filibuster-happy Republicans and claim "helplessness" when their constituents demand they get a bill through to benefit them for a change.

This proves all the excuses the Democrats have about filibustering Republicans, obstructionist Republicans, and all that other bull, is just that, bullsh*t.

The Democrats are complicit in getting nothing through the Senate unless it's for Big Business that promise them the world while voters only promise them their vote. And we're fickle in their eyes.

I hope this will show some skeptical Progressives what kind of Congress President Obama is dealing with, and why we couldn't even get a Public Option through, or funding to close Gitmo, or pushing for unemployment benefits for the unemployed in our country as Pres. Obama urged Congress to do last summer and was ignored until the last moment. They only agreed to pass it when they agreed to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy - a privileged group in both Senate and the House on both sides of the aisle.

I was incredibly depressed when the Senate Dems allowed the bill to change the filibuster rule, to die a silent death as the deadline to change the rule, approached and passed without a whimper. I knew then, nothing would be done for us little people.
