Should a multi million dollar lottery winner still be able to claim food stamps?
Wow, thats just ballsy. What a tool. Glad to see they system working as intended.

Stuff like this is ammo for those who want to decrease social spending.

A man who won $2 million on a Michigan lottery show has told TV5 that he still uses food stamps.

Leroy Fick of Bay County admitted he still swipes the electronic card at stores, nearly a year after winning a jackpot on "Make Me Rich!" He told TV5's Bill Walsh that more than half the prize went to taxes.

"If you're going to ... try to make me feel bad, you aren't going to do it," said Fick.

Meanwhile, Fick's lawyer says his client hasn't done anything illegal. Attorney John Wilson said the state knows Fick won the lottery money, since it "issued the check."

1. He should be charged with fraud...
and made to pay it back with a fine.

2. When I applied for food stamps, I had to disclose all my income and the tiny, tiny amount that I got
Edited on Wed May-18-11 10:29 AM by patricia92243
was based on that. I don't understand how he is getting food stamps unless it is because he was approved for a year and that year was the same as the $2M prize was awarded.

4. Basically...
... this guy took his winnings as a lump sum. The welfare system does not count that as income and so according to them he is still "needy"

5. Is it worth worrying about the few people that game the system
or cost effective to heavily regulated to find the few cheats?

Or shouldn't we be happy the vast majority on food stamps need them and eat better because of them?

20. Objectively, no, but...
...it's the cheats that really burn peoples' butts, because it's closer to home than things that cost far more money.

They see this guy and other rule weasels being poster-children for government waste, while things like defense contractor fraud go on out of sight (and out of mind), even though Defense waste and cheats cost many, many times more than aid cheats.

7. If he no longer meets the state's requirements because of 'assets', then he's committing fraud.

9. The report makes clear that food assistance eligibility is based on income, not assets.
Eligibility for cash assistance (e.g. TANF)is based on assets.

8. It's clearly not the intent of the law to provide assistance to someone with the means, however
any legislative attempt to convert eligibility to an asset-based system rather than an income one is liable to hurt far more people by denying those who have a tangible asset like a house but no cash. It's far better to let the MI DHS policy people develop a fix for treatment of lump sum payments as income.

16. Agree. It's easy to point at this guy, but IMHO, it's better to
let the guy skate, realize there's a huge problem here, and find a way to fix it.

It's ugly, to be sure, and his attitude sucks and I'd rather he didn't get the assistance, but in the meantime, I think the taxpayers and the authorities need to suck it up and fix it somehow.

12. When I lived in PA, I was on welfare for 8 months
After I broke my leg while uninsured (I was in a cast for 7 months and couldn't work), the hospital set this all up for me. When I went in to fill out the paperwork, I had to sign a paper that said if I EVER won the lottery, I'd have to payback what I received from welfare. Apparently they don't run things the same way in all states.
