How to Ride the NYC Subway
By Sherry Wolf
May 7, 2011

1.If you detest being touched by strangers while standing or sitting, hearing the most intimate details of others’ social lives and smelling a variety of human scents, might I suggest Montana as an alternative? I hear it’s quite spacious. Eight million people live here and with the exception of many severely handicapped folks, all but the wealthiest who prefer traffic jams to expedited travel, ride the subway and it is simply impossible to avoid human contact in all its inglorious forms. Deal with it or leave.

2.One simple physics law dictates subway etiquette—two bodies cannot occupy the same space at the same time. This is an erudite way of explaining that when entering a subway car, walk the fuck in and get out of the way of the doors!

3.If you are incapable of sitting with your legs together so as to make room for others, you are either inexplicably rude or your genitals require medical attention. If it is the latter, please tend to this serious condition; if it is the former, you have lost all claims to a seat on the New York City subway at times when it is packed.

4.If you have a seat during rush hour, you are a temporary member of the subway aristocracy, which does not absolve you of paying some attention to the others in the car. For example: refusing to give up your seat to an injured person, a pregnant woman, an elderly person or anyone else requiring a seat more than you is a sign that you are an anti-social low life, unfit to live in a major cosmopolitan center. Period.

1. Boy, can I relate to that. I'm going broke taking cabs to work
because more and more I just can't drag myself down into that hell hole and put up with the nastiness that goes along with riding the subway.

2. I'm not from NYC, but like so many outsiders have a media skewed "fear" of riding the subway.
I think videos like this don't help the image that the NYC subway is a zombie zoo on railroad tracks:

4. A tasty treat.

All you can and should do is ignore people with obvious mental problems, drugs or otherwise, and stick to your reading or other business.

6. And while you're busy reading or other business, someone's pickpocketing you or
coughing and sneezing on you.

20. in all my years in big cities, and that is about 8
i have never been pickpocketed, people have tried and failed, money and id cards in front hip pocket, along with my phone. anything in a backpack of value is not on top, dirty socks and underwear yes, one time someone got a hand on the dirty boxers and i turned and laughed when i saw their expression to be holding my gym boxers... which i got back.

12. Actually, the fact that other riders are able to ignore that man is remarkable to me.
In the sparsely populated area of NE Ohio where I live, someone like that would cause a reaction akin to total panic, but in The City it seems people just shrug their shoulders on go on with what they were doing. The man next to him didn't even get up and move to another seat. I fail to understand how he was able to do that.

3. When I lived in NY I preferred taking the subway
And quite frankly, anyone who lives there that does not take it on a regular basis is a p*ssy.

I never had a problem on the subway, and while the smells during the summer could be almost hallucinogenic, I wasn't getting ripped off by over-priced taxis, and I was getting to my destination faster than if I drove into the city.

Real New Yorkers take the subway. Period.

10. "I never had a problem on the subway"

Ditto......It was far less pleasant to deal with the assholes on I-95 en route to my apartment in New Rochelle.

21. people seem to think that you have to worry on the subway in NYC
but you dont, avoiding pickpockets is easy, keep money and valuables in pockets you can keep your eyes on, that goes for anywhere in any town.

23. I know, it's not that they are that dangerous - It's just that they are
disgusting and a pain in the ass if you don't have an easy commute.

11. I love the subway
in all its grittiness. My son who recently broke his ankle and is in crutches takes a taxi to work from the village to 30 Rock. As soon as his cast is off he'll be taking the subway.
