White House claims new ally in debt limit fight: Ronald Reagan

The White House is enlisting the help of someone dear to its Republican opponents as it tries to win congressional support for raising the nation's $14.3 trillion debt limit.

Ronald Reagan.

Amid a sea of paper released today by the Treasury Department was a four-paragraph letter Reagan wrote in November 1983 to then-Senate majority leader Howard Baker, who later went on to serve as White House chief of staff.

"The full consequences of a default -- or even the serious prospect of default -- by the United States are impossible to predict and awesome to contemplate," wrote The Gipper. He went on:

Why can't people leave his sorry dead ass in the ground.

Republicans will simply ignore what he says.
