Will Mitch Daniels be the next President of the United States?
The Republican field is very weak. The GOP has one chance. The party needs to convince Daniels to run and then convince the primary voters not to go with the crazies. A very long shot.

However, if that happens, what chance does Daniels have? To me, he looks ideal to at least give Obama a run for his money. Your thoughts?

2. Maybe 2016.
I know a lot can happen in a year and a half but I just think the GOP will put up some sacrificial lamb, someone who is delusional enough to think he has a shot. Maybe Romney since he's probably willing to dump a lot of his own money into the race.

24. Sure. They also have "illegal" hispanic maids and put their arms around the black guy at
the country club. They certainly wouldn't vote for them, though.

18. You're probably right
though he did do fairly well in 2008. IA isn't the begin all end all of politics. Huckabible won IA in 2008 if I remember correctly and he didn't go anywhere after that.

I can see the GOP letting Romney have at it just to see him lose and be out of the way for 2016.

25. Yes
2016 is the earliest reasonable shot the Repubs have at the presidency.

He would look so pathetic. No. I think the only GOP candidate who can be a threat to Obama is Mittens.

31. We will never see that. They use little platforms to stand on
during the debates. That already happened with Kucinich.

32. True. But the desparity in height will be seen when they shake hands before the debate
or after. Then they'll have to step off the platforms and come forward to shake hands.

Indeed, there is great excitement among Arab Americans about the possibility of having one of our own on the presidential ticket in 2012.

11. You have a point
Daniels would be a "fresh face". Whenever we took the White House back from the other party, for the last fifty-one years, we did so with a fresh face, someone who hadn't been overexposed for the last half dozen years or so.

If Caribou Barbie sways the fundies towards Daniels, he might just pull off the nomination. If the economy still sucks, the President will have a definite uphill battle.

20. politicususa: Depressed Republican Leaders Are Convinced Obama Will Easily Win Reelection
http://www.politicususa.com/en/gop-obama-reelection

May 18, 2011
By Jason Easley

A Politico story on Mitch Daniels today began with this sentence, “Top Republicans are increasingly convinced that President Barack Obama will be easily reelected if stronger GOP contenders do not emerge".

I suspect that Republicans are begging Mitch Daniels to get in the race for no other reason than to at least give Mitt Romney a credible challenger. Daniels is as interesting and exciting as watching paint dry, but his candidacy would represent a serious upgrade to the current 2012 GOP field. The truth is that the dull Daniels won’t beat Obama, but at least he won’t embarrass the party.

Hurting the entire party is exactly what the GOP leadership is dreading with any of these current Republican candidates. Top Republicans are coming to the realization that the prospect of enticing a top tier candidate into the race is looking grim, so they are trying to find a candidate who can at least hold the base and not cost them anything more than the presidency.

None of the current candidates motivates the base, and Mitt Romney could actually depress Republican turnout if he wins the nomination. The only potential candidate who could fire up the base in a race against Obama is Sarah Palin, but she is reviled to such a degree outside of the GOP that her name atop the ticket would boost turnout among Democrats and Independents who despise her. Palin would be an unmitigated disaster for Republicans at all levels in every race.

I think this assessment is much better than yours.

30. I just remember
how formidable Bush the Elder looked at this point twenty years ago, right after victory in the Gulf War, and a virtually unknown Southern governor (who was considered a bit of a windbag) broke through a pack of better-known challengers in his party.

The next eighteen months is a lifetime in politics.

I live in Indiana and that fucker is worthless; anyone and I mean ANYONE who cuts education funding for any damn reason can go fuck themselves and this includes Mitchell Elias Daniels. His atrocity was a wave of legislation that is just vile; from his 'prolife' bill to his appalling education reform...He has also said that he could beat Obama, but his severally indecisive about running...Obama would clobber that clown.

for some reason people think that makes him competitive with Obama.

and it does because for some, the one difference in these two characteristics makes all the difference.

28. I've been saying he'll be
the candidate since last year but I don't think he'll beat Pres Obama. This was Bush's budget director during the worst recession we've had since the 1930's. He's a pretty boring guy and I know this shouldn't matter but we all know it does - he's only 5'7". He's not well liked by the right wingers - they think he's too moderate (same guy that signed the law that defunds Planned Parenthood in IN). He made noise about how social issues should be left aside for this election and you can just imagine how that went over with the teabaggers.
