This story has everything. Guns, circumcision. Sadly, no breastfeeding in Olive Garden though.

So what do people think? Is this man a villain? A hero? A victim of a stingy medical system that doesn't want to pay for unneccessary surgeries? Did he do something bad, but understandable given the situation? Should the family have just generously coughed up the money, seeing it was for a good cause? Is this an instance where guns can be truly useful?

Not trying to start a flame war (well okay, maybe I am). Just wondering what people think.

1. Hopefully the intact child will oneday have a helluva story about how he almost lost part of his
penis, but was saved by one of the strangest series of events one could think of.

3. Call me cynical, but I'm betting he wanted the $500 for crystal meth.
If it was really about circumcising his baby, he could have done it himself with a sharp rock or a kitchen knife. That's how most of the ancient worshippers of that one local Middle-eastern war god known for having that particular bizarre and unsavory fetish did it, after all.

13. That, or just failure to think outside the box.
I've read plenty of accounts of people doing it on their kitchen table with an exacto knife. There's no reason why a person living in the modern world couldn't do it with a bit of equipment from a hardware store and some rubbing alcohol. Sure, it's not ideal, but it's certainly better than what they had in OT times when they were doing it with sharpened rocks, and they mostly did okay.

It's not like he'd be in any worse legal trouble if he got caught, which he probably wouldn't be if he can manage a modicum of physical coordination.

5. We'll see more of this as Republicans cut off bootstraps.
They act as if poor people will have no choice but to suffer and starve, but the truth is many will find a way. No one starves because they can't get assistance, and when someone in need can't get an honest job, they'll find a dishonest one.

I'm not excusing this person who did this, my point is that when people are desperate, they do desperate things.

11. Not circumcising your baby = starving? And it's the Republicans fault?
Sorry, just did a little bit of a double take there.

As far as I'm aware, there are no industrialised countries with universal health care where non-therapeutic infant circumcision is a covered service. The few people who choose it pay for it out of pocket. It's got nothing to do with Republicans and bootstraps and starvation. More like sensible allocation of limited health care resources.

One of the other options this man had was to take the desperate measure of leaving his kid's penis alone. I guess there's not too many people in this country who are quite THAT desperate.

What fiendish treatment of poor people we have in this country.

17. Uncircumcised men are, ehm, "better", imho
Having "had" both......just my opinion.

The scary thing is that if I would have had sons, instead of daughters all, I would have had my sons circumsised at that time. However, I've learned/lived more since that time and now, with what I have learned, would NEVER have my son (if I had one) circumsised.

18. Lucky you had daughters then.
I'm glad that I reached that conclusion before I had my sons.

Hopefully you can transmit your knowledge to your daughters to the benefit of any possible grandsons.
