FBI investigates Unabomber in '82 Tylenol deaths

CHICAGO (AP) -- The FBI says it's investigating whether Unabomber Ted Kaczynski (KAH'-zin-SKEE) was involved in the 1982 Chicago-area Tylenol poisonings case that killed seven people.

Kaczynski wrote in court papers filed in federal court in California last week that prison officials conveyed a request from the FBI in Chicago for DNA samples.

Chicago FBI spokeswoman Cynthia Yates confirmed Thursday that the agency has asked for Kaczynski's DNA. She says he's refused to voluntarily give a sample but declined to say whether the agency could compel him to provide one.

1. Sure, why not ?
Should be blame him for everything else that happened in the 80's too?

3. Well, it's his MO.
Sneaky, cowardly killing of completely random innocent people from afar. His folks lived in Chicago at the time, so it's conceivable that Ted could have been in the city during the scare. The only thing missing is the manifesto - I'm not aware of any demands that something be published by the alleged killer.

4. The Unabomber killings weren't random.
He chose his targets based on his own dogma about technology keeping people apart. He chose some wrong -- if I remember correctly, he sent a bomb to a guy who had the same name as someone he wanted to kill, but it was the wrong guy -- but there was internal logic to his choices. Stupid, deluded, vicious, egomaniacal, and repellent internal logic, but internal logic nonetheless.

Not saying he's innocent of the Tylenol killings, but it isn't his MO. Killers do change their MO on occasion.

5. The Tylenol poisonings were the first big market change I remember in this country.

They say everything changed after 9/11. But I say everything changed after the Tylenol poisonings. We went from innocent to protective.

7. I remember that
It went from "pop off the cap" to "push down, turn, snap, poke, peel...."

8. I saw a program that some woman did it in order to kill her husband and then to cover it up, she put
poison in some of the other medicines in the store. I thought they said that is how it all began. ????????

11. Strange about the Tylenol killings and Zodiac.
It would seem that since serial killers typically seem to escalate and increase the number of their victims and the boldness of their crimes, that they would have stuck around and committed more. But, instead, these two prolific murderers just disappeared as suddenly as they'd sprung on the national scene. Not that I'm complaining. It's just an observation.

12. there was a lot of weirdness like that in the 60s. not only in the us, but overseas.
and it all contributed to a perception that things were spinning out of control.

were spinning out of control.

then came the conservative reaction.

some of those things were apparently not what they seemed at the time.

just an observation.
