Atlantic hurricane season "above normal": NOAA
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/19/us-hurricane-forecast-noaa-idUSTRE74I53B20110519

(Reuters) - The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season will produce six to 10 hurricanes, the U.S. government's weather agency forecast on Thursday, predicting an "above normal" tropical storm period.

In its first forecast for the season that begins on June 1, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) anticipated 12 to 18 named storms, with six to 10 developing into hurricanes.

Three to six of those could be major Category 3 or above hurricanes, with winds of more than 110 miles per hour (177 km per hour), the agency said.

1. It is the end of the world
After Saturday, we will be plagued by Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Fires and all sorts of violent storms. Unless you are among the saved.

:sarcasm:

7. I've lived in Florida for 42 years ...
and I've yet to see the eye of a hurricane.

I lived in the Tampa Bay area for 37 years and I did see a lot of tropical storms, some which were close to hurricane strength. In 2004 I evacuated my home and went to my daughter's home near Ft Myers Florida. Hurricane Charley was supposed to hit the Tampa Bay area and the residents were urged to leave. The hurricane took a hard right as it passed Ft. Myers and I was approximately 70 miles form the center. Fortunately Hurricane Charley was a small storm so we experienced only some fairly high wind and rain. I definitely would not have wanted to be 40 miles closer.

10. I lived in South Florida most of my life until I moved
to the Atlanta area. And believe me, I have seen plenty of hurricane eyes. But of course, I had lived in South Florida since I was 6 years old. I am now 72 years old.

11. Some people say that the Tampa Bay area and Jacksonville ...
are geographically less prone to get hit by a hurricane.

I also know that if Tampa ever gets hit by a major hurricane it's going to be a big mess. Where I lived at the worst case scenario would have put 21 feet of water in my neighborhood.
