GOP sets up huge target for budget ax
WASHINGTON — The incoming Republican majority in the House is moving to make good on its promise to cut $100 billion from domestic spending this year, a goal eagerly backed by conservatives but one carrying substantial political and economic risks.

House Republican leaders are so far not specifying which programs would bear the brunt of budget cutting, only what would escape it: spending for the military, domestic security and veterans.

The reductions that would be required in the remaining federal programs, including education and transportation, would be so deep — roughly 20 percent on average — that Senate Republicans have not joined the $100 billion pledge that House Republicans, led by the incoming speaker, Representative John A. Boehner, made to voters before November’s midterm elections.

Just what we need more money for war and less for education and transportation. :nuke: The destruction of America continues.

1. back in the USSR
(Insert the tune and rest of the words of the song)

It's guns or butter, but not both. My mother used to tell me that was the difference between the countries...we spent money on our country and the Russians spent their money on guns. I guess that's what Khruschev meant when he said they would destroy us from the inside.

3. It's All Bullshit...
First...they can pass laws out of Congress that declare the moon is made of cheese (and I'll bet you there are freepers who believe it) and it'll get lots of corporate media hyperventilation and then nada. Just like we saw with all the meaningful legislation that the Pelosi House passed, this manure will die in committee or fail to meet the 60 vote cloture rule that I expect to be retained (and not a bad thing).

We'll have two years of a dysfunctional legislature...totally consumed in dog and pony theatrics. The only legislation that can pass is those agreed to by a majority of Senate Democrats and this administration.

The problem is "defecit cutting" is a big issue...and should be. The debt is out of sight and the politicians don't have the stones to cut out the billions being squandered on wars for profit and raising taxes on those who benefit the most and pay the least...so where do you think the cutting will come from?

4. Don't be surprised about what gets through the Senate
Don't be surprised about what Obama is willing to cave on. After all, having broken his promises and caving in on both the public option and tax cuts for the rich, nothing is impossible. Especially, as evidenced by the Catfood Commission, his mind is already in a spending cuts mood.

5. No chance of cutting back some of the unnecessary overseas military bases?
Seriously. It's only out of spite that we're holding onto the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.. and how many bases are we still operating in Europe? There's you're $100 million (and more) right there. Cutbacks on domestic spending = bullshit.

6. There are still countries without a US military base.
That constitutes "room for expansion"...
