And I run across some real fundy nutbags in my day to day travels.
How about you?

1. Same here.
Even my conservative friend at work thinks these end-timers are nuts.

Surely, somewhere, some true believer is sitting in his basement with a couple of cases of chili and a shitload of shotgun shells. Gonna ride it out.

4. I met a bunch of them in NYC last week.
And I think these people are true believers. I'm not sure they will be able to handle it if it doesn't happen.

Saw a few of them out on sidewalks handing pamphlets.

6. I've seen/heard nothing around here. I had expected to see some billboards or
something, maybe some teeshirts, some loudmouths, but nothing. This area is pretty affluent and educated, so if they do believe it maybe they keep it home and in the basement as someone else mentioned.

8. Same here
It's probably going to turn out to be 17 weird people all blown up for sensationalism.

Not only can't I find anyone who believes it, I can't even find a fundy that ever heard of this except from the news. It's got to be a very small number of people.

I'm sure someone will do some sort of prank stuff like that.

We're bored, it became a big story.

9. What if it happens, but only 7 people world wide get raptured, and...
they're people nobody would miss anyway. So the rapture happens and nobody notices that it happened.

14. We got a leaflet in the little cubby below our mailbox the other day.
Sad thing is I think a lot of these true believers have been duped into turning over all their material wealth over to the church because...
well you don't need any more than the worries about the next few weeks...

and we'll let you sleep in the back of this van and give you one bologna sandwich a day.

Jesus wants you to use your money to reach the unsaved.

And remember. It's only a few more weeks.

Think of the reward up there. You don't have to worry about retirement or your kids education.

Jesus wants you to just sign on this line.

15. No one really believes it other than a teeny, tiny, irrelevant minority of fundy
Christians. Who happen to have some nutbag with a radio show.

This is a non-issue, but it makes for good sport, poking fun at the fundies, so it gets lots of play.

at some point in the future. Which is frightening.

20. They're all over New York.
These people have been handing out flyers, talking about it in the street, etc. They've taken out ads in the subway and at bus stops.

I was walking home today and this car passed me: it was plastered with all sorts of messages about the "End of the Word" and it had speakers on top of it blaring a siren-like sound and proclaiming the end is near..

30. Yesterday there was a full page ad in the Gannett papers (Journal
News of Westchester/Rockland) warning people to get ready. However, the actual end-timers I know believe it will be 2012, not this year.

21. No one will know the day or the hour.
The May 21st prediction is not Biblical.

Matthew 24 says you can know the season, but not the day or the hour.
Setting a date like this doesn't stand the Biblical tests. Even Jesus said his return would be as a thief in the night, when you least expect it.

This date is not something that is spread across Christianity as a whole. Only a few vocal nuts are raising a ruckus about it.

22. I and the other artists at an outdoor show
all got the pamphlets. A group was there in force with matching tee shirts, some with sandwich boards, and apparently a large number of pamphlets. They were working the entire crowd, and fortunately, were largely ignored.

25. Not one.
Of course, most people that I encounter on a daily basis realize that the "rapture/end-of-the-world" bit is a psychological process, that happens daily.

29. Haven't met any Personally but...
I just read in the local newspaper that there is a group of about 50 who have been meeting in my town regularly for the past year. They plan on meeting on Saturday in one of the parks here to await the rapture. Can't figure out where they come from. We have some fundamentalist churches in town but I don't think "Brother" Camping's followers belong to any church. If you're online looking through DU postings, you might want to pass the time listening to this old Jean Shepherd show on the end of the world crazies from 1974. Very relevant today.

31. Had one at the bus stop for a couple of days.
If he was representative of the type, he was pretty old. I kept thinking "Why the rush, Short timer?"

Nobody at the bus seemed to be reading the handouts, which looked like they'd been copied by xerox and in layout strongly resembled the original Dr Bronner's label. Little boxes upon boxes, many printed in itlaic 8 point type. Just the kind of thing I can conviently not read because I would need my glasses to do so...

I did my good deed and directed a few stray ones into the trash can. I'm sure with the world ending on Saturday and all he probably would have no thought of policing his own litter.
