Was he always this inconsistent in what he said? If so, how did he manage to become Speaker, when he would have been pissing off everyone on his own side half the time? Is there just greater scrutiny of what politicians say now, compared to the 90s (eg easily available audio clips and transcripts on the internet)? Or is he just losing his ability to keep his story straight in his own mind?
