A Rerun From The Party That Almost Brought Us The 2nd Great Depression

Get Ready for a G.O.P. Rerun

By BOB HERBERT

You just can’t close the door on this crowd.

The party that brought us the worst economy since the Great Depression, that led us into Iraq and the worst foreign policy disaster in American history, that would like to take a hammer to Social Security and a chisel to Medicare, is back in control of the House of Representatives with the expressed mission of undermining all things Obama.

Once we had Dick Cheney telling us that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and belligerently asserting that deficits don’t matter.

We had Phil Gramm, Enron’s favorite senator and John McCain’s economic guru, blithely assuring us in 2008 that we were suffering from a “mental recession.” (Mr. Gramm was some piece of work. A champion of eregulation, he was disdainful of ordinary people. “We’re the only nation in the world,” he once said, “where all of our poor people are fat.”)

Maybe the voters missed the entertainment value of the hard-hearted, compulsively destructive G.O.P. headliners. Maybe they viewed them the way audiences saw the larger-than-life villains in old-time melodramas. It must be something like that because it’s awfully hard to miss the actual policies of a gang that almost wrecked the country.

Move along, folks, nothing to see here but Republicans trying to please their rich masters again. That's what they do best, eh?

1. "Deficits don't matter" if repukes are in full control
They only matter if the deficits have been dumped on the next Democratic administration.

2. The GOP is devoid of principles, scruples, and common sense
when it either allows the economy to fail or deliberately makes it fail in order to gain dominance politically as agents for its true master(s): the corporations. I could see throwing a bone here and there but they seem to be totally enslaved and unable to act independently for the sake of the country.

3. Somehow, the term "treason" comes to mind...
...when it comes to operating with a goal to destroy the economy and bring on a second Great Depression, causing untold suffering for millions of Americans, so that they can portray Obama as a "failure" and regain political control in 2012.

If a political party were to conspire to hand over our country to a foreign power, in the bargain that they would be made overlords by that foreign power once they had taken control, they would be rightly viewed as traitors and subject to appropriate penalties. How is this all-that-different?
