Environmentalists fear Christie nominees for N.J. Highlands Council will weaken water protection act
Three longtime members of the state’s Highlands Council said farewell today, signaling a change of the guard on the panel that oversees development in seven counties.

Environmentalists fear Gov. Chris Christie’s nominees — awaiting vote in the Senate — will try to weaken the Highlands Act, adopted in 2004 to protect the water supply for 5 million state residents.

One departing member, Chester Township Councilman Bill Cogger, a Republican who supports the Highlands Act, said, "It would be unconscionable if the governor has nominated for appointment a member who is opposed" to the act.
