Comcast cuts off funding for Reel Grrl's summer camp - over tweet about FCC hiring
Tweet about FCC member’s new job at Comcast sets off firestorm

WASHINGTON - Comcast has absorbed a lot of criticism since its decision last week to hire Meredith Attwell Baker, a sitting member of the Federal Communications Commission.

But one critical remark really got under the company’s skin.

When an employee of Reel Grrls, a nonprofit educational program in Seattle, sent a tweet questioning Baker’s hiring after the commissioner voted to approve Comcast’s mega-venture with NBC Universal, Comcast’s reaction was swift and harsh.

The company cut off funding for Reel Grrls’ summer camp, where 15 teen girls learn documentary script writing, editing and filmmaking.

1. So the message is...
Do documentaries but don't actually comment on a substantive issue regarding how we get our information and who has control of the content of those information sources.

3. That will show those girls!
Breaking teen girls hearts because of something a different employee said! I can see Comcast has a lot of potential for philanthropic endeavors :eyes:
If I could, I'd drop Comcast but because they monopolized the internet and cable around here and everything else is too expensive, I cant.

5. This is the problem with no true competition Comcast
Edited on Fri May-20-11 01:39 PM by MadMaddie
knows there are not many options for customers. So we are screwed. Many of these industries need to be "Ma Belled".

7. You're not screwed. Simply do without. I do.
My wife and I have no TV at all. Since the switch to digital transmission, we no longer get any air signals. Our landlady won't let us put up a satellite dish. And I refuse to do business with any cable companies -- fuck 'em. Therefore: no TV.

Tell you what: we are so much happier! We have more time to read, watch movies, play games... and our blood pressure has gone down.

The problem here isn't that there's no competition. The problem is in YOUR head, in that you consider TV to be a necessity.

UNPLUG AND FREE YOURSELF.

9. Tee Vee isn't the only service they provide.
A network is pretty essential in today's world.

10. Apparently comcast is trying to back down and want to restore the funding
Edited on Fri May-20-11 05:59 PM by Salviati
Claiming that the VP who pulled the funding was acting alone.

Howver, Real Grrl's have declined to accept the restoration of funds.

11. $18,000, that's the scale of the Comcast Reel Grrls funding
That's lint in the pockets of Comcast. Clearly not about scale. So about message. Managed democracy has arrived. Resistance is futile.

$18,000. Comcast will pay more in PR fees to counter being such a dick (and not the good kind). So I expect they'll follow through on their reversal (thanks for the update, good news for the Reel Grrls).

1 out of 100, that's how many psychopaths walk among us, according to guy who wrote recent psychopath test book. Among CEO's that rate is 4 out of 100. Easy bake recipe for soulless corporations, one charismatic heartless executive on every board.
