Tornado dog' crawls on broken legs to family
Edited on Sat May-21-11 10:02 AM by Veronica.Franco
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (KABC) -- Almost three weeks after deadly tornadoes tore through Alabama, an incredible story of survival has emerged about a dog that crawled home to its family on two broken legs.

Mason, a terrier mix, was picked up and swept away by a tornado. His family searched but could not find him.

Then Monday, two and a half weeks later, they came back home to sift through the debris and found Mason waiting for them on the porch.

2. The vet
returned my call last night and said that Mason is on an IV because he's too weak and ill to eat after so long being without water, his white blood count is elevated so he's also receiving antibiotics, and normally they don't try to save animals with multiple breaks but after all he's survived they decided to do everything they can to save him ... she's brought in another surgeon whom she will assist in setting both legs ... he's supposed to be in surgery today ...

30. Well, Mason has had a great day.
He may be getting slightly spoiled with the hand feeding and sitting in laps during down time but that is ok. But, now it is time to turn in and get some rest. Talk to everyone tomorrow.

Can't afford more, since Soc. Sec. froze the COLA, but this is worth it.
Trussville is just outside Birmingham, about 3.5 hours from where I live.

Thanks for including the fund address, Veronica.

18. They have set up a fund ...
This story was locked out because the vet gave fund information for the sick dog and I posted it on the DU ... if you want to donate to the fund the vets name is listed in the article or you can privately contact me ....

Only the DU can ask for money on the DU ... now FACEBOOK allows you to post as much of the article as you please
it is really a free press ... probably one of the last ones ...

21. I'll give the vet a ring tomorrow ..
To see how he did over the weekend ... they have been putting in some long hours and I don't want to bother her on a Sunday ... she told me that she cried too when giving an interview about Mason ... we both cried on the phone ... she said she was doing everything in her power to give him the best chance to recover ...

24. Website for MASON with LINK! .....
Friday 11:00 A.M. --------Mason was transported to Dr. Milton and Dr. Ballagas facility around 9:00 this morning to begin prepping him for surgery. Surgery should be starting around noon. As soon as I hear from Dr. Lamb I will post a progress report here.

Friday 03:00 P.M. --------Here is the latest update on Mason. He is now out of surgery and in recovery. The doctors said the surgery went well and have high hopes for a great recovery. I will post more as it comes to me.

Saturday 11:15 A.M. --------Mason is eating well and was able to swap over to oral meds this morning. He is having an adjustment period to the large wraps and splints on his front legs but that is to be expected. I will try to post an update tomorrow but if not I will have one first thing Monday morning. Also, someone mentioned making a facebook page for Mason so keep an eye out for that Monday morning.

I will read animal stories like this and cry - whereas I can read tragic human stories and not feel as much.
