Widow Builds Vault, Could Get Corpses Back
Widow Builds Vault, Could Get Corpses Back

WYALUSING, Pa. -- It looks like Jean Stevens will be reunited with the two people she loved so much that she wanted them to keep her company after they died.

The 91-year-old widow who lived with the embalmed corpses of her husband and twin sister - until authorities found out and took them away - is hopeful they'll be returned soon.

Workmen at Stevens' rural property outside the northern Pennsylvania town of Wyalusing have been busy the past few months, erecting a gabled building with gray siding and a white door. It resembles an oversized shed, or a smaller version of Stevens' detached garage.

In reality, it's a mausoleum that Stevens intends as the final resting place of her husband of nearly 60 years, James Stevens, and her twin, June Stevens. And authorities have told her it's the only way she can get them back.

She can't wait.

1. Someday her heirs are going to try to sell that house.
Good luck to them.

5. The mausoleum is a little quirky, but there are plenty of properties
in PA (and other states) that have family graveyards as part of the parcel.

10. There's some places around here like that.
But none of the graves are right next to houses, as this mausoleum appears to be. Maybe somebody will want to make a scary movie there someday.

6. But I couldn't teach the dog to load the dishwasher!!!
How do you train zombies, anyway??? I don't have a sink fairy who magically loads the dishwasher in the night.

7. I read fantasy...
even published a few fantasy short stories. But in my opinion, Miracle Max had it right.

Inigo Montoya: He's dead. He can't talk.
Miracle Max: Whoo-hoo-hoo, look who knows so much. It just so happens that your friend here is only MOSTLY dead. There's a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive. With all dead, well, with all dead there's usually only one thing you can do.
Inigo Montoya: What's that?
Miracle Max: Go through his clothes and look for loose change.

8. I can understand her need to keep them close.
I keep my husband's ashes in an urn in my bedroom. I don't know if I would want to keep his corpse though.

9. Mom's ashes are right by dad's computer, with his name on urn next to hers
Once he goes they will be combined and spread out on the wind.
