teabagger I know is convinced we're going to give the Southwest back to Mexico
Apparently they heard Glenn Beck making some comparison between Israel returning to its 1967 borders and giving the Southwest United States back to Mexico. He started droning on and on about "reconcistas", "La raza", immigration, etc. I tried to explain that there is absolutely no way that something like that would ever actually happen, but he just kept responding with "Obama this" and "liberals that".

It's encounters like this that reaffirms my belief that there is simply no debating with these people; the stupid is just too strong in them. If Glenn Beck says something, to them it's as solid fact as Newton's laws of thermodynamics.

5. Ha, he already thinks that Al Qaeda is sneaking terrorists across the border
Because they all look alike, right? Seriously, these are some seriously xenophobic, racist idiots who believe anything they hear from Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, Savage, etc.

15. No, it would NOT be.
I'm pretty tired of Texas always being depicted negatively here on DU ;(

There are TONS of democrats down here in Texas, and Obama WON the majority of our largest cities/counties in the 2008 election, but people seem to always forget that fact!

9. Maybe so, but do you think there's any chance of that actually happening?
Even though I might agree that we stole that land from Mexico, I just don't see it going back to Mexico anytime.

11. So what! I have lots of Mexican friends and neighbors here in S. California.
Why the fuss. Many of the original rancheros that later became Los Angeles were owned at least in part if not entirely by Mexican-Americans. They were here before we were. It's just racist to think as some of these right-wingers do.

16. No it won't
Even if the demographics of the Southwest became 100% Mexican-American (which it won't), it still wouldn't go back to Mexico. It doesn't quite work that way. For one, the US wouldn't sit by and allow a sizable portion of itself to break away; California and Texas alone represent a significant portion of this country's economy, and there are quite a few other considerations.

The only way it would possibly happen is if there were some catastrophic breakdown of the US, with other regions splitting off.

19. What does that mean, exactly?
Mexican Americans are traitors who are reproducing for the purpose of hijacking the Southwest?!

And nobody told me?!

22. When you leap to conclusions you do so with gusto.
The current borders of any nation-state are not written in stone. Many will change over the next 50-150 years. The American Southwest in one of the easier ones to forecast.

It will not be treason, or hijacking - it'll be self determination.

23. The Confederacy already tried that once
Sorry, but a group of states can't leave just because they want to. Besides, you're assuming that the majority of Mexican-Americans living in the Southwest would want to give up being part of the US and become part of Mexico.

25. If they wanted to live in Mexico, they'd be living in Mexico.
They came here because they wanted to be in the U.S. -- they don't want part of the U.S. to become Mexico.

It is the Land of Enchantment, and that's no lie.

Maybe we could rename it "Old America" instead.
