Small towns in cold areas, I mean really small towns, several hundred people,
do they have snowplows? I can see they'd have the need, but I wonder about affordability for a
very small population.

I had a dream about this. I frequently dream about cold areas when it is hot as the dickens in RL.

:-)

2. The city may now, but a citizen usually does.
I lived in a town of about 1,000 growing up. The city (or county? not completely sure) had a plow, but there were a few other people that would plow neighborhoods and schools for free. They charged to do your driveway, but they went out and plowed alot of street and other things on their own.

that plow roads in small rural towns.

6. People have snow plows they put on the front of their 4 wheel drive vehicles
and they go about their business plowing the snow off the roads for the ones who don't have a snow plow or 4 wheel drive.

7. A lot of times the residents have plow hookups for their trucks
(those who have trucks) and plow the area for everyone.

Damned communists. x(

8. Yes, our township has one snowplow and our workers plow
the roads that are the township's responsibility. Some of the township roads have signs that say "No Winter Maintenance", but those are roads that don't have any residents living on them. The population of my town is about 170.

The main road running through town is a state route, so the state workers plow it.

9. My brother takes care of roads in his township
Edited on Wed May-25-11 08:11 AM by Tippy
He had one truck with a plow and suplemented that by using a road grader to push snow off roads...When the snow was rally bad farmers helped with the removal using tractors with blades on them. It's called making do....

10. I lived in one of the small towns here in WI when I first
moved here. The town had a population of 104 (not counting us which made it 109). The town was built on two roads forming a T. The county plows took care of us very promptly. We never had a problem. All of the little towns here are built on County Trunks and the county plows take care of snow.

12. We have them here - central NH burg, population minus 1K.
Comes out of taxes, property or some sales, either to state maintenance or private companies.

Don't worry about it; it gets done because it has to.

16. If you are not needing a job, there are some real bargains to be had
Edited on Wed May-25-11 09:15 AM by SoCalDem
all over the northern states. I once found a fantastic school right on a lake in North Dakota.. the price for the whole thing was under 100K.. It had a beautiful gymnasium, multiple classrooms that could easily have been converted into rooms, and a full service kitchen with every appliance you could ever need.. A large family or artists' colony could have gone there.. BUT the weather sucks..

edit// I found the listing.. and it was sold... don;t know how much it sold for or who bought it or for what purpose

19. I've lived in tiny towns in the Great Plains. Yes, we had plows.
And you always wanted to be friends with the guy who had a pickup with a snowplow blade attachment. He could get you out of your driveway.
