Obama orders U.S. agencies to buy green vehicles
Source: Raw Story
By Agence France-Presse

WASHINGTON — The US administration will only buy vehicles using alternative energy sources to equip its fleet by the end of 2015, President Barack Obama announced Tuesday.

The timeline is part of Obama's plan to cut US oil imports by a third by 2025 and put a million advanced vehicles on the road by 2015.

"By December 31, 2015, all new light duty vehicles leased or purchased by agencies must be alternative fueled vehicles, such as hybrid or electric, compressed natural gas or biofuel," Obama said in a memorandum sent to heads of all US executive departments and agencies.

"The federal government operates the largest fleet of light duty vehicles in America. We owe a responsibility to American citizens to lead by example and contribute to meeting our national (energy) goals."

1. Increased demand fueled (no pun intended) by government purchases
will lead to more production, leading to gearing up for more production, leading to lower per-unit costs for manufacturers, leading to lower costs for consumers wishing to purchase the same vehicles.

This is what we needed back in the 1990's.

2. Didn't Crazy Herman Cain just say that Government doesn't create jobs?
I love when they are proved wrong almost immediately.

3. The government has a mandate to do things at the lowest effective cost...
And this will mean a slightly higher cost per mile, at least at first. Be interesting to see if this is challenged.

4. Don't get all excited. They're considering "hybrids" to be AFVs and there's already Hybrid Suburbans
Which is what they'll be ordering because that's the most wasteful vehicle they can get their hands on.

6. All manufacturers have a 3-year lead time to gear up.
Foreign manufacturers, as well as domestic manufactures, can position themselves to take advantage of this policy if they choose to.
