Colorado inmates catch useful trade in raising fish for food
Source: Denver Post

The DOC fish program provides tilapia fillets with no hormones to a business that sells thousands of pounds of fish to Whole Foods Market, which then distributes them to 27 stores in the Intermountain West.

The tilapia program gives Jay and nearly 100 other inmates at minimum- security Arrowhead Correctional Center in Cañon City something to do for a nominal wage.

1. I'm sick and tired of prison labor
Not only does it take advantage of a workforce at pennies on the dollar, it takes opportunity for a civilian workforce to make a living.

5. its a tough issue...
on the one hand, everything you say is true. however, IF prisoners are going to be picking up skills, i'd rather it be something useful like this than the awful conditions elsewhere.

8. I'm a bit conflicted as well. It seems like a valuable part of rehabilitation,
and people will be much less likely to re-offend if they can get jobs, but on the other hand it's a pretty unfair competition for people outside of prison. And, the possibility of abuse or non-voluntary work is always there.

I'd like it a lot better if the industries had to pay wages and overhead comparable to outside industries (with adjustments for the extra risks of a prison environment), even if the money went to victim's funds or prison services rather than a direct paycheck...

7. It's either that or they'll be singing with the fishes.
Which is what the GOPhers want for all of us.

Time to drain the swamp and vote them out of office.

Then make some alligator luggage out of them.
